Coil, never fold

This is the whole page in three words, and everything else follows from it. Artificial garland is a wire spine with foliage wrapped around it. Coiling puts a gentle, consistent curve into that spine across its whole length; folding puts a sharp bend into two specific points, and wire takes a set at a sharp bend.

Coil loosely, in the largest diameter your container allows — a wide coil is a shallower curve. Then let it sit as a coil rather than compressing it flat, which is the second half of the same principle.

Lit garland is a light-storage problem

Pre-lit garland is two products in one box: greenery that must not be creased and a light string that must not be tangled. The reel solves both at once, which is why it is the answer here rather than a bigger tote.

Greenery is shaped when it goes up and unshaped when it comes down, and how you store it decides how much of that work you repeat. Two habits pay for themselves:

• Shape it roughly before it goes away, not just when it comes out. Foliage stored in something close to its finished shape needs a touch-up in November rather than a rebuild.
• Keep runs whole. Three 9-foot garlands stored as three coils are three decisions next year. The same three cut apart and mixed into a tote are a morning.

Soft foliage needs more room, not less

Cedar-style and mixed-foliage garland is bought precisely because it reads as softer and looser than stiff pine, and that softness is the first thing lost to compression.
