The best upright tree storage bags, for a tree that never comes apart

Store a pre-lit tree standing and you never unplug a section again. The catch is height: a 9 ft tree stored upright needs a 9 ft space.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Labeled boxes lined up on storage shelving

Every January an artificial tree is taken apart, and every December it is put back together. For a pre-lit tree that means unplugging and re-plugging the section connectors every year, which is where most pre-lit failures start.

An upright bag skips the whole cycle: the tree goes into storage standing and assembled, on a rolling stand, and comes out the same way. Five bags below, ranked on the height they take, the stand they ship with, and the one measurement you must make first.

Good

  • The tree never comes apart, so a pre-lit tree's section connectors are never unplugged and re-plugged
  • A rolling stand means the bagged tree wheels into storage rather than being carried

Watch out

  • No published bag diameter, which is the floor space the stored tree takes
  • A 9 ft tree stored upright needs more than 9 ft of height — an 8 ft garage ceiling will not take it

Good

  • Sized for the 7.5 ft tree, which is the most common artificial tree height
  • A 7.5 ft tree stored upright fits under an 8 ft ceiling, if the stand is low

Watch out

  • Stand height is not published, so the margin under an 8 ft ceiling is unknown

#3 — Heavy trees and frequent moves

Good

  • The cheapest way to keep dust off a tree that stays assembled

Watch out

How we ranked these

Fit and mobility first — the height of tree the bag takes and whether it wheels — then access, then what else is published. No listing here publishes a bag diameter, so floor footprint is a gap across the whole category.

The ceiling check comes first

The arithmetic

  1. 7.5 ft tree = 90 in; 8 ft ceiling = 96 in
  2. 96 - 90 = 6 in left for the stand and the bag top
  3. 9 ft tree = 108 in: taller than an 8 ft ceiling by 12 in
  4. Stand height: not published by any listing here

A 7.5 ft tree stored upright fits under an 8 ft ceiling only if the rolling stand is less than about 6 in tall. A 9 ft tree does not fit under an 8 ft ceiling at all without taking the top section off.

So measure the room before choosing the bag. A 9 ft upright bag is for a tall basement, a garage with a high ceiling, or a tree whose top section comes off. The same measuring discipline for every storage decision is on how much storage space do I need.

Why upright is worth it for a pre-lit tree

Section connectors are the weak point of a pre-lit tree: every season they are unplugged, flexed and pushed back together. A tree stored standing never goes through that. It also keeps its shaping — the hours spent fluffing branches are not undone by folding them flat into a duffel.

The cost is floor space and height. A duffel-style bag stores a disassembled tree lying down in a fraction of the height; those bags are ranked on the best Christmas tree storage bags, and the two approaches compared on how to store an artificial tree.

The stand does the carrying

An assembled pre-lit tree is heavy and awkward, and the rolling stand is what moves it. The heavy-duty stand bag is built around that fact, and its multiple zippers let you open the bag around the tree rather than lifting the bag over the top — which, with a 9 ft tree, is the difference between a one-person job and a two-person one.

Which bag

For a 7.5 ft tree — the most common height — the 7.5 ft bag is the right size and the only one here likely to clear an 8 ft ceiling. For a 9 ft tree with a tall space to keep it in, the TreeKeeper is the pick. Our skip is a single cover sold for 8, 9 or 10 ft trees, which means it is loose on two of them, and it has no stand.

Where it goes

A bagged upright tree wants a dry corner with the height to take it — not a damp garage floor, where the base of the bag sits in whatever the floor gives it. The room choice is on attic, garage or basement, and the pre-lit trees themselves on pre-lit Christmas trees.

Questions

Can you store an artificial Christmas tree assembled?

Yes, in an upright storage bag. The tree stays standing and assembled on a rolling stand, which is kinder to a pre-lit tree’s section connectors and keeps its branch shaping.

How much height do I need to store a tree upright?

The tree height plus the stand. A 7.5 ft tree needs 90 in plus the stand, which fits an 8 ft ceiling only if the stand is under about 6 in. A 9 ft tree needs more than 9 ft. No listing here publishes its stand height.

Upright tree bag or duffel bag?

Upright if you have the height and a pre-lit tree you would rather not take apart. Duffel if space is tight: a disassembled tree lying down needs a fraction of the height.

Can I store the tree with the ornaments on?

One bag here is sold for exactly that. Take off anything glass first — rolling the bag over a threshold is enough to crack it — and keep shatterproof ornaments on.
