Upright or flat: two ways to store the same artificial tree
Upright keeps the tree assembled and costs you floor. Flat costs you an hour of fluffing next December and fits on a shelf.
By Sawyer V. · Published

There are only two ways to store an artificial tree. Leave it standing, wrap it, and roll it somewhere — or take it apart, compress it and put it in a bag. Both are sold as tree storage bags, which is how people end up with the wrong one.
Upright storage saves the annual argument with the branches. Flat storage saves the space. Which one is right depends entirely on what your garage or basement actually has spare, and that is measurable.

How we compared them
Published dimensions where the listing gives them, published tree height, and what comes with the bag. Then the floor-against-shelf arithmetic, which is the only comparison that matters once the tree is in the room it will live in.
| Bag | Format | Tree height | Published dimensions | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TreeKeeper upright | Upright | Up to 9 ft | Not published | Rolling stand included |
| Upright cover | Upright | Sold for 8, 9 or 10 ft | Not published | None stated |
| Elf Stor rolling bag | Flat | Up to 12 ft | 67 x 28 x 24 in | Three wheels, 600D Oxford |
| Primode rolling bag | Flat | Up to 7.5 ft | 50 x 16 x 22 in | Wheels |
Neither upright bag publishes a dimension, which is the whole problem with buying one: the figure that decides whether it fits is the one nobody prints. Both flat bags publish all three.

Floor area against shelf volume
An upright bag stores a tree at its assembled width. A flat bag stores it at its compressed width. That difference is the comparison, and it is large.
The arithmetic
- A 7.5 ft full tree stored upright: published assembled width 59 in, so a 59 in circle = 19 sq ft of floor
- The same tree in a flat bag: 50 x 16 in footprint = 5.6 sq ft
- 19 / 5.6 = 3.4
- And the flat bag is 22 in tall, so it goes under a shelf; the upright bag is 7.5 ft tall and cannot
Upright storage takes roughly three and a half times the floor and all of the height. Flat storage takes a shelf. In a single garage that is the entire decision.
The volume arithmetic for a whole collection, including how many totes a tree bag is worth, is on how much storage space do I need.
What upright buys back
Time and shape. A hinged tree that is never collapsed is never re-fluffed: the branches keep the position you set them in, which on a 2,250-tip tree is the best part of an hour saved every December. It also means the lights stay on a pre-lit tree undisturbed, and disturbing them is what kills sections.
That is a genuine benefit and it is worth paying floor space for if you have floor space. It is why upright bags come with rolling stands: the assumption is that the tree gets wheeled to a corner rather than lifted onto anything.
Protection is a wash, with one exception
Both formats keep dust off and both keep the tree together. The flat bags here publish 600D Oxford fabric and a full set of dimensions; the upright bags publish neither, so on published protection the flat bags win by default rather than by design.
The exception is compression. A flat bag squeezes the branches for eleven months, and that is what loosens flocking and bends the finest tips. If the tree is flocked, upright is genuinely kinder — see flocked or unflocked. Either way, damp is the real enemy in a garage: damp and pest protection.
Who should buy which
Buy upright if you have a basement corner, a spare garage bay or an unused closet with the height, and you want to skip fluffing. Buy the one with the rolling stand, and measure the route.
Buy flat if storage is a shelf, an attic or a cupboard — which for most houses it is. Buy on published dimensions rather than on a "fits up to" claim, and check the longest section of your own tree against the bag length. The field is ranked on Christmas tree storage bags and upright tree storage bags, and the method is on how to store an artificial tree.

The pick for a pre-lit tree and a tall storage space. Check the ceiling height before anything else.

Good
- The tree never comes apart, so a pre-lit tree's section connectors are never unplugged and re-plugged
- A rolling stand means the bagged tree wheels into storage rather than being carried
Watch out
- No published bag diameter, which is the floor space the stored tree takes
- A 9 ft tree stored upright needs more than 9 ft of height — an 8 ft garage ceiling will not take it

Good
- The cheapest way to keep dust off a tree that stays assembled
Watch out
- One bag claimed to fit three heights means it is loose on two of them
- No stand, so the tree still has to be carried

Good
- Published external dimensions, so you can check it against your shelf before it arrives
- 67 inches long takes the longest section of even a 12-foot tree without forcing it
- 24 inches tall is low enough to slide onto a standard garage shelf, which the bag it replaces was not
Watch out
- 67 inches long needs a deep shelf or a clear floor run
- Folds flat when empty, but the wheels stop it stacking under anything

Good
- 16 inches wide and 22 tall fits shelving that a 9-foot bag simply will not
- Published dimensions again — the exception rather than the rule
Watch out
- Genuinely will not take a 9-foot tree; the size limit is not conservative

Questions
›Is upright or flat tree storage better?
Upright if you have the floor and the height: no fluffing, no disturbed lights. Flat if storage is a shelf — a flat bag takes about a third of the floor and 22 inches of height rather than 7.5 feet.
›How much space does an upright tree bag need?
The tree's assembled footprint: a 59 in wide tree is about 19 square feet of floor, plus its full standing height. A flat bag for the same tree is about 5.6 square feet and fits under a shelf.
›Do upright bags fit through a garage door or up stairs?
Often not, and neither upright listing here publishes a packed height. Measure the route — door tracks, stair turns and light fittings — before buying.
›Does flat storage damage a tree?
Compression loosens flocking and bends the finest tips over eleven months. On an unflocked tree it is a non-issue; on a flocked one, upright is genuinely kinder.
