One porch scheme, September to December
Four occasions, one set of permanent pieces, and a short list of things that swap. The plan that stops you buying four porches.

Between early September and the end of December a front porch is asked to be four different things: early autumn, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Buy for each separately and you own four porches, store four porches, and put four porches up.
The alternative is a small permanent structure — lighting and containers that stay put — with a short list of things that swap. It is less to buy, far less to store, and it looks more coherent, because the bones of the display do not change every six weeks.

What stays up for four months
Three categories of thing are seasonal in trim but not in form, and those are the ones to buy properly:
- Lanterns. A pair at the top step works with pumpkins in October, a harvest arrangement in November and evergreens in December. Only the contents change.
- Containers and planters. Whatever holds the seasonal planting is a fixture; the planting is the variable.
- The lighting layer. Path markers, the step lights and the timer in front of them do not know what month it is.

September to Thanksgiving
The fall wreath is the single decision that sets the tone for the first half, and it is worth choosing a colour that works past Halloween rather than one that reads as October only. A 24-inch maroon maple wreath is the deeper, less orange option and it carries into November far better than a bright harvest palette does — which matters because it is on the door for ten weeks. For the October feature, the piece that earns its place is the one that also stores well. The one real changeover
The last weekend of November is the only genuine reset in the whole plan, and it is worth doing in one pass rather than in stages. Fall wreath off and into its container, gourds out, greenery on.

What this plan lets you not buy

The saving is real but the storage saving is larger, and on a small porch that is the constraint that actually bites — which is the subject of fall decor on a small porch. What all of it does need is somewhere sensible to live for the rest of the year, and that allocation is on attic, garage or basement.
