Thanksgiving decorating: the four weeks between two seasons
Thanksgiving is a handover, not a season of its own. Here is what carries across from October and what is worth buying just for November.

Thanksgiving sits in an awkward four-week gap. Buy a full set of decorations for it and they are in a box for eleven months. Buy nothing and the porch looks abandoned between a Halloween teardown on November 1 and a Christmas setup in December.
The resolution is to treat it as a handover: choose the fall pieces in September so most of them carry, and change three or four things on November 1.

Read that table backwards and it becomes a shopping rule: in September, buy the harvest palette rather than the Halloween one, buy metal rather than plastic where you have the choice, and buy warm white rather than orange lights. Almost nothing is lost at Halloween and most of it survives to Christmas.
The November 1 changeover, in order
- Take down anything explicitly Halloween. Skulls, spiders, inflatables, orange lights. Do it promptly — the weather is still mild enough to dry inflatables properly, which is the whole basis of Halloween storage.
- Leave the wreath, the lanterns and the pumpkins. If they are harvest rather than Halloween, they are already Thanksgiving decorations.
- Swap orange lights for warm white. The single change that most shifts a porch from Halloween to harvest.
- Add one or two November-specific things. A door mat, a hand-tied bundle of wheat or dried stems, a table centerpiece. Small, cheap, genuinely seasonal.
The table, which is where Thanksgiving actually happens
Unlike Halloween and Christmas, Thanksgiving is mostly an indoor, single-day event, and the decorating that matters is a table people sit at for three hours. Three things do most of the work:
- A low centerpiece. Anything above about 12 inches blocks sightlines across the table, and a centerpiece people have to look around is worse than none.
- Candles that are not scented. Scent competes with food, and it wins.
- Something that survives being moved. The centerpiece gets moved when the food arrives. Anything fragile or top-heavy will not survive that.
A run of the same greenery you use elsewhere — a length of garland laid down the middle of the table with a few candles — is the cheapest good answer, and it is already in the house.
Then the Christmas handover
Thanksgiving weekend is when most households put up outdoor Christmas lights, because it is the last mild weekend before December. That makes the timing worth planning:
- Fall decorations come down on the Friday or Saturday, and go into the fall zone per the storage system.
- The lanterns stay out. They just get evergreen instead of maple.
- Outdoor lights go up while it is still mild. The load arithmetic is in how many amps, and the picks are in the best outdoor Christmas lights.
- The Christmas wreath replaces the fall one on the same hanger, in about a minute.
