The best Halloween fog fluid, matched to the machine you already own

Density, hang time and the machine wattage range are the three published figures. Low-lying fluid is the one that catches people, because it does not stay low without a chiller.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Froggy's Fog Halloween and Party fog fluid, 1 gallon, 400 to 1500 W

Buy a gallon of water-based, high-output fluid that publishes a machine wattage range, and the Froggy’s Halloween and Party gallon is that bottle: 400 to 1500 W, which covers every fog machine ranked on this site. If the yard has to stay foggy all evening, buy Swamp Juice instead — it is the only fluid here with a published hang time, at 2 to 3 hours. For a covered porch or a doorway, the FogWorx medium density is the right class, because extreme density in a confined space fills it and stays there. For hiding a prop, the FogWorx Extreme is the thickest here and publishes an odorless formulation.

The one that catches people is low-lying fluid. It is formulated for a chiller or a ground fogger, and in a standard machine the fog rises anyway — which is why it is the skip on this page rather than a pick, despite being a perfectly good bottle.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

Good

  • States the machine wattage range it is formulated for, which is the one compatibility fact in this category and which a third of the field leaves off
  • Four hundred to 1500 W spans every machine on this site's fog machine page, so it is the fluid that fits whatever you already own
  • Water based, which is what a domestic machine takes — oil-based haze fluid is a different product for a different machine

Watch out

  • No published hang time, so how long the fog stays visible is unstated
  • A gallon is more than one Halloween night needs for most 400 W machines, and once opened it has to be stored somewhere frost-free
  • High output in a small enclosed porch is too much fog; this is a yard fluid

Good

  • The only fluid on this page that publishes a hang time, and 2 to 3 hours is the figure that separates a yard that looks foggy all evening from one that needs the machine retriggered every four minutes
  • A long hang time means fewer machine cycles, which means less fluid used and a cooler machine over a four-hour trick-or-treat window
  • Sold for home haunters rather than DJs, which is the use case this site's readers actually have

Watch out

  • Does not publish the machine wattage range, where the pick above states 400 to 1500 W
  • Long-hang fluid leaves more residue on a porch floor and on anything the fog settles over
  • Dense persistent fog across a sidewalk is a visibility question for drivers and walkers — it wants a yard, not a street edge

Good

  • Publishes the machine range and an odorless formulation, which matters on a porch where people queue for ten minutes
  • Extreme high density is the thickest class here, which is what you want if the fog has to hide a prop rather than just drift
  • The density and odor claims together are the most complete formula description on the page

Watch out

  • Near the top of this page's price band, and density is the whole of what you are paying for
  • No published hang time, so density is stated and persistence is not
  • Thick fog triggers smoke alarms if any of it drifts through an open door, which is a real failure mode on a porch display

FogWorx medium density organic fog fluid, 1 gallon, 128 oz

Good

  • Medium density is the right class for a covered porch, a doorway or a small front garden, where an extreme-density fluid fills the space and stays there
  • Publishes the volume in both gallons and ounces and the machine range, so the per-night cost is actually calculable
  • Thinner fog clears faster, which is what you want if the fog crosses a path people walk on

Watch out

  • Medium density will not hide a prop the way the extreme fluid does
  • No published hang time

Froggy's Fog Cryofreeze low-lying fog fluid, 1 gallon

#5 — skip this

Froggy's Fog Cryofreeze low-lying fog fluid, 1 gallon

1 gallon, formulated for chillers and ground foggers

Skip this here. Low-lying fluid is a good product and the wrong buy for almost everyone reading this page. It is formulated for chilled output — fog chillers, ground foggers and low-lying generators — and in a standard fog machine with no chiller the fog still rises, because the machine decides where the fog goes, not the fluid. If you do not own a chiller, this is the bottle that makes people think their new fog machine is broken.

Right fluid, wrong page for most readers. Buy it only if you own a chiller or a ground fogger; in a standard machine the fog still rises.

Good

  • The listing is explicit about the equipment it is for — chillers, ground foggers and low-lying generators — which is exactly the honesty this purchase needs
  • Low-lying fog across a lawn is the effect most people picture when they buy a fog machine, and this is the fluid that produces it in the right machine
  • A gallon is a season's worth for a graveyard scene

Watch out

  • In a standard fog machine with no chiller it does not stay low — the fluid is formulated for chilled output, and the machine decides where the fog goes
  • Publishes no density class and no machine wattage range
  • A chiller or ground fogger is a separate and much larger purchase than the fluid

How we ranked these

Published machine wattage range first, because it is the only compatibility figure this category has. Then density class, which decides whether the fog hides a prop or drifts. Then hang time, published by exactly one bottle here. Then volume. We have not run any of these through a machine; every figure below is one the listing prints.

Density class is the listing's own wording — high output, extreme high density, medium density, extremely long lasting. There is no standard behind those terms, which is why hang time and machine range matter more.

The one compatibility figure, and why it covers your machine

Three of the five bottles here state they are formulated for 400 to 1500 W machines. That range is worth checking against what you own, and on this site it checks out: every machine ranked on Halloween fog machines that publishes a wattage at all publishes 400 W, 500 W or 1000 W, so every one of them sits inside the published range of all three fluids.

The two bottles that do not publish a range are the Swamp Juice and the Cryofreeze. For the Swamp Juice that is an omission; for the Cryofreeze it is almost beside the point, because the question there is not the wattage but whether there is a chiller in the path.

What no bottle publishes is a consumption rate — how many ounces a machine burns per minute of output. So the only honest statement about volume is the obvious one: a gallon is 128 ounces, it is more than one evening for a domestic machine, and once opened the remainder has to be stored somewhere that does not freeze. A quart is a one-night bottle; a gallon is a season.

Why low-lying fluid is the skip

The fog that rolls across a lawn and stays at ankle height is what most people picture when they buy a fog machine, and it is the effect low-lying fluid is sold for. The fluid is real and it works. What makes it the wrong buy for most readers of this page is where the effect actually comes from.

Fog rises because it is warmer than the air around it. Low-lying fog is produced by cooling the output before it leaves the nozzle, which is what a fog chiller, a ground fogger or a low-lying generator does — usually with ice. The Cryofreeze listing says so plainly: it names chillers, ground foggers and low-lying generators as the equipment it is for.

Put it in a standard fog machine and the fog still rises, because the machine decides where the fog goes and the fluid does not. It is the bottle that makes people think their new fog machine is faulty. If you want ground fog, the purchase is a chiller or a ground fogger — a much larger buy than the fluid — and the fluid comes after it. Both routes, with the circuit arithmetic that rules most of the class out of a household outlet, are on low-lying fog machines and fog chillers.

Density, and matching it to the space

Density is the choice between fog that hides something and fog that drifts, and the right answer depends on how enclosed the space is.

The arithmetic

  1. Open front lawn, fog disperses fast: high or extreme density
  2. Covered porch or portico, fog is contained: medium density
  3. A prop to obscure — a tombstone row, a figure: extreme density
  4. Fog crossing a path people walk on: medium density, which clears faster

Two of the four common cases want medium density, and the field almost entirely sells high and extreme. The one medium-density gallon here is the right bottle for a porch, which is where most domestic fog machines actually end up.

Hang time is the other half of this. The Swamp Juice publishes 2 to 3 hours, which is the only visibility figure anyone in this category prints. Over a four-hour trick-or-treat window a long hang time means fewer machine cycles, which means a cooler machine and less fluid burned. The cost is residue: persistent fog settles on a porch floor and on anything it drifts over.

Where the fog goes, and the two things to plan around

Two failure modes are worth planning for and neither is about the fluid.

The first is indoors. Thick fog drifting through an open front door sets off smoke alarms, and it is the commonest way a porch fog machine ruins an evening. Point the output away from the door, and keep the door shut while the machine is cycling.

The second is the street. Dense, persistent fog across a sidewalk or a driveway apron is a visibility question for drivers and for the children walking past. Keep the fog in the yard and off the road, and on a windy night accept that an open front garden is the wrong place for it. The lighting that makes fog read as fog rather than as haze — a low light behind it rather than a floodlight on it — is on lighting a Halloween display, and black light through fog is covered on black lights for a Halloween yard.

Storing a part-used gallon

Fog fluid is water based, which means it freezes, and a gallon bought in October usually has most of a gallon left in November. Frozen and thawed fluid can separate, so the remainder wants to go somewhere that stays above freezing — which rules out an unheated garage or a shed in most of the country, and makes this one of the few Halloween items that should not live with the rest of the Halloween boxes.

Keep it upright, capped, and labeled with the date opened. The general habit that makes that work — and the reason awkward Halloween items need their own handling — is on Halloween decoration storage and labeling and inventory.

Questions

›What fog fluid should I use in my Halloween fog machine?

A water-based fluid that publishes a machine wattage range covering your machine. Three of the fluids here state 400 to 1500 W, which covers every machine ranked on this site. Never use oil-based haze fluid in a water-based machine, and never improvise.

›Why does my fog machine fog rise instead of staying low?

Because fog rises when it is warmer than the air around it, and a standard fog machine has nothing to cool its output. Low-lying fog needs a chiller, a ground fogger or a low-lying generator. Low-lying fluid in a standard machine does not fix it — the machine decides where the fog goes.

›How much fog fluid do I need for Halloween?

A gallon is a season for a domestic machine and a quart is about one night. No listing in this category publishes a consumption rate, so that is the honest range rather than a calculation. Store the remainder above freezing.

›What is fog hang time?

How long the fog stays visible in the air before it disperses. Only one fluid here publishes it, at 2 to 3 hours. A long hang time means fewer machine cycles over an evening, at the cost of more residue on surfaces the fog settles over.

›Does fog fluid set off smoke alarms?

Dense fog drifting indoors through an open door will. Point the output away from the house, keep the door shut while the machine cycles, and use a medium-density fluid in a confined porch rather than an extreme-density one.
