Fog is the cheapest special effect in Halloween decorating and the one most likely to take the rest of the display down with it. Every fog machine works by pumping fluid through a heated block, and the heater is where almost all of the wattage goes — which makes a fog machine one of the largest single electrical loads in a yard.

The circuit arithmetic, before anything else

This site uses one rule for every continuous load: keep it at or under 80 percent of the circuit rating. On an ordinary 15 A household circuit that is 12 A, or 1,440 W, and a Halloween display is a continuous load for five or six hours a night.

The arithmetic

  2. 400 W fog machine / 120 V = 3.3 A = 28% of the budget
  3. 1,000 W fog machine / 120 V = 8.3 A = 69% of the budget
  4. 12 A - 8.3 A = 3.7 A left for everything else on that circuit

A 400 W machine shares a display circuit comfortably. A 1,000 W machine leaves 3.7 A for everything else — roughly one inflatable blower and a few light strings — and needs a circuit mostly to itself.

The practical consequence: if you want the big fog, find the big fog its own outlet on a separate breaker. The method for working out which outlets share a breaker, and what else is on them, is on Halloween yard display power, and the rule itself on how many amps.

Output claims, and how far to trust them

CFM — cubic feet per minute — is the only output figure this category publishes, and it is a manufacturer claim with no shared test behind it. Compare it within a wattage class rather than across brands with any precision.

What the numbers do tell you is the class. The 400 W machines publish around 2,000 CFM; the 1,000 W machines publish around 5,000. That two-and-a-half-times difference is real and visible: a 400 W machine makes a patch of fog around a feature, and a 1,000 W machine makes a yard of it. On a porch, the bigger machine is too much.

Tank size and the length of an evening

Two listings publish their tank. The Froggy’s Fog holds a pint and the BORGOVA holds a liter.

The arithmetic

The BORGOVA carries just over twice the fluid. No listing publishes consumption per minute, so we do not print a run time — but a bigger machine also empties a tank faster, so keep a second bottle of fluid by the door either way.

Fog goes where the wind goes

Outdoors, fog is a weather problem. On a still night it pools in low ground and hangs around a feature; with any breeze at all it streams sideways and disappears. Put the machine upwind of what you want to shroud, not beside it.

The other physical fact worth knowing: heated fog rises as it leaves the nozzle. Fog that hugs the ground needs chilling, which is a different kind of machine, and none of the five here claim to do it. What these make is a haze at head height that settles as it cools.

Fog is what makes light visible

On its own, fog in the dark is invisible. Put a light through it and every beam becomes a solid object — which is why a fog machine is the cheapest upgrade to a display that already has a spotlight or a projector.

Aim a colored light across the fog rather than into it, and keep the light low. The method is on Halloween display lighting, and the projector choice on Halloween projectors. Fog around a graveyard of foam tombstones is the classic pairing for a reason.

The remote, and who is holding it

A 15 ft wired remote means standing within 15 ft of the machine. That is fine if the machine sits by the door; it is useless if the machine is out in the yard. The VIRFUN publishes a wireless range of up to 45 ft, which is the difference between firing it from behind the front door and firing it from a bush.

The BORGOVA’s timer is the other answer: bursts on a schedule, nobody holding anything. That is the right mode for a display that runs all evening; on-demand is the right mode for timing fog to someone arriving.

Rain, cords and where the machine sits

None of the five publishes a weather rating. That puts every one of them under cover — on a porch, under an overhang, or inside a ventilated box — and never directly on wet ground. Indoors, fog from these machines can set off some smoke alarms. Keep it well away from detectors, or keep it outside where it belongs.

Putting it away in November
