The best solar step lights, for stairs you actually use after dark

A light on every step is a safety fixture first and a decoration second. Output, weather rating and a battery that lasts the night decide which pack.

Porch and deck stairs are the part of a yard most likely to trip someone after dark, and the part least likely to have a light on them. Solar step lights fix that without an electrician: each unit carries its own panel, battery and LEDs, and fixes to a riser or a rail.

They also light the steps for guests at every holiday of the year, from trick-or-treat to a July 4 barbecue. The difference between packs is how much each one publishes. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these

Output and weather rating first, because a step light has to light the tread and survive standing water. Then battery and runtime, then pack size. Where a listing does not publish a figure, it scores lower.

NIORSUN's runtime is quoted after 5 hours of sun. IP67 means dust tight and protected against temporary immersion.

One light per step

The arithmetic

  1. Example: a deck stair with 6 steps (an assumption — count yours)
  2. One light per riser: 6 lights
  3. Both sides of a wide stair: 12 lights

An 8 pack lights a 6-step stair one per riser, with two left for the landing. The SOLPEX 16 pack covers both sides of a wide stair, or a stair plus the deck rail.

Five hours of sun

The NIORSUN listing is honest about the catch: its 8-10 hour runtime comes after 5 hours of sun on the panel. A step light is small and sits low on a riser, where a railing, a planter or the house itself can shade it. Check the steps at midday before buying. If the risers are in shadow, mount the lights on the rail posts or the stringer instead, or accept that they will run short on cloudy days.

The arithmetic

  1. NIORSUN runtime: 8-10 h after 5 h of sun
  2. Example evening: dusk at 8 pm (an assumption)
  3. 8 pm + 8 h = 4 am; 8 pm + 10 h = 6 am

After a sunny day the NIORSUN lights the steps most or all of the night. After a cloudy one, expect less; no listing here publishes a cloudy-day figure.

Winter sun is lower and shorter still. The trade-offs are on solar vs plug-in outdoor lighting.

Tool-free or screwed

The DHELINK listing promises a tool-free install on any flat surface in direct sun — stairs, decks, fences, walls. That makes it the easy choice for a rented deck or a rail you would rather not drill. For risers that take knocks from boots and snow shovels, screws hold better than adhesive. The VOLISUN matches the NIORSUN’s 80 lumens and IP67 and publishes less; it is the close second.

Why DetarZinLED is the skip

The DetarZinLED pack is warm white and sold as waterproof, and that is all the listing title gives: no lumens, no IP rating, no battery, no runtime. The NIORSUN is the same pack size with every number published.

The rest of the yard

Step lights are one layer. The path to the steps is on solar path lights, the posts at the top on solar post cap lights, and the whole plan on backyard and garden lighting.

Questions

How bright should solar step lights be?

Bright enough to show the edge of each tread. The two brightest here publish 80 lumens each, mounted low on the riser.

Do solar step lights work in shade?

Poorly. The NIORSUN’s 8-10 hour runtime is quoted after 5 hours of sun. Check the steps at midday; if they are shaded, mount the lights on the rail posts instead.

How many step lights do I need?

One per riser for most stairs. A 6-step stair takes 6, so an 8 pack covers it with two for the landing.

Are solar step lights waterproof?

The best-documented ones are rated IP67: dust tight and protected against temporary immersion. Two packs here only say waterproof, and one publishes no rating at all.
