The best solar post cap lights, ranked on the one number most of them publish
Post cap lights run from 5 lumens to 160. That thirty-two-fold range is the difference between a marker and a light you can walk by.
By Sawyer V. · Published
Solar post caps are the easiest permanent light a deck or fence can have: they replace the cap on top of a post, charge all day, and light all night, with no wiring. They stay up year round, which makes them the base layer every seasonal display on a deck sits on.
Unusually for solar lighting, most of these publish lumens. Five packs below.

#1 — The brightest published post cap

160 lm from 52 LEDs, IP65
7.5
/ 10
The pick on published brightness. Buy it where you need light rather than a marker, and accept that this listing will not tell you the color of it.

Good
- 160 lm is enough to light a deck step, not just mark a post, and it is the joint-highest published figure on this page
- IP65 is published, which on a cap that sits in the weather all year is the rating that matters
- A black shell disappears against a dark post in daylight, where a white cap reads as a fitting
Watch out
- No published color temperature on this listing, so whether it is warm or daylight white is unknown until it arrives — the INDARUN cap below publishes 6000K
- Black shell only in this listing
- No UV or material claim published, and the shell is what yellows or chalks first on a cheap post cap

Specs from the Amazon listing (ASIN B091HXJNMT), verified via the Creators API 2026-10-07. Replaces B091HW2S74, Sumaote's white 4-pack, which Amazon now shows as currently unavailable. The 160 lm output, 52 LEDs, IP65 rating and 4-pack carry over from the same product line; the 6000K color temperature and the UV-protected shell claim are NOT published on this listing and have been removed rather than carried across.

5 lumens against 160
The arithmetic
- 160 lm / 5 lm = 32
- 120 lm / 5 lm = 24
The brightest cap here puts out 32 times the light of the dimmest. A 5 lm cap marks where the post is; a 120 to 160 lm cap lights the step beside it.
So choose by the job. Along a fence, where the point is a line of glowing posts, 5 lm warm white is right. At the top of deck steps, where someone needs to see their footing, the 160 lm Sumaote is the one to buy.
Measure the post, not the label
A nominal 4x4 post is not 4 inches square; dressed lumber sold as 4x4 measures about 3.5 in. Caps are made to that. The SUNWIND publishes a base fit up to 5.15 in, the multi-fit cap covers 4x4 to 6x6, and the Sumaote 120 is the only one published for 3x3 metal and vinyl posts. Measure yours with a tape before ordering.
A year-round base layer
Post caps stay up all year and carry every season: wrap the posts with garland at Christmas, tie bows on them for the Fourth of July, and the caps keep glowing on top. The argument for lighting you never take down is on year-round outdoor lighting, and path lights to go with them on the best solar path lights.
Questions
›How bright are solar post cap lights?
From 5 to 160 lumens here. 5 lm marks a post; 120 to 160 lm lights a step beside it.
›Will a 4x4 post cap fit my post?
A nominal 4x4 measures about 3.5 in. Measure your post, and check the published fit: one cap here fits 4x4 to 6x6, and one fits 3x3 metal and 4x4 vinyl.
›Are solar post cap lights waterproof?
Two here publish IP65. One also publishes a UV-protected shell, which stops the cap yellowing in sun.
›Warm white or cool white post caps?
Warm white if they sit near warm porch or string lights; cool white only if brightness matters more than matching.
