The best Christmas light arches, over the walk or down the drive

One lit arch over the front walk is an entrance; three down the driveway are a tunnel. Height, width, frame and anchoring decide which.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Close-up of colored string lights against a dark background

A lit arch is the one Christmas decoration people walk through rather than past. One arch over the front walk turns the path into an entrance; three in a row down a driveway turn it into a tunnel, which is why most are sold in threes.

It is also a big, light object standing in a walkway, so height, width and anchoring matter as much as the lights. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these

Size and anchoring first — an arch has to clear the people under it and stay put in the wind. Then the lights and the build, then what the listing publishes.

Only VIHOSE publishes a width. Only Geetery names its frame and its stakes.

Headroom and width

The arithmetic

  1. 6 ft adult = 72 in
  2. 8 ft arch = 96 in: 24 in over a 6 ft adult at the top of the curve
  3. VIHOSE: 10 ft high x 8.9 ft wide
  4. Over an example 4 ft walk (an assumption): (8.9 - 4) / 2 = about 2.5 ft each side

An arch is a curve, so the full height is only at the center; the 24 in of headroom under an 8 ft arch shrinks toward the legs. A 10 ft arch leaves room to spare, and the VIHOSE's 8.9 ft width puts its legs on the grass either side of a 4 ft walk.

Spacing a tunnel

The arithmetic

  1. Example driveway: 30 ft (an assumption — measure yours)
  2. 3 arches, one at each end and one in the middle: 2 gaps
  3. 30 / 2 = 15 ft between arches
  4. Or over the first 20 ft only: 20 / 2 = 10 ft apart

Three arches over 30 ft stand 15 ft apart — a gateway at each end with one between. Pull them to 10 ft apart over the first 20 ft and they read as a single tunnel. If the drive is in use, check that a car still fits between the legs.

Anchoring

An arch is tall, light and open, so the wind pushes on the whole curve. The Geetery listing is the only one that names its anchoring — ground stakes on a metal frame — which is why it leads the three-packs. For the rest, stake each leg and run a guy line to a stake on the windward side; the method is the same as on anchoring a yard piece. Across a paved drive, where stakes cannot go in, weight each leg with a sandbag.

Power and color

None of these listings publishes wattage. LED arches draw little, but a tunnel of three means three plugs at the end of a driveway, often the farthest point from an outlet. Run one outdoor cord to a power stake at the middle arch; the rules are on outdoor light safety and extension cords.

The Mr. Christmas arch is warm white with C9-style bulbs, which matches a classic C9 roofline. The VIHOSE and Burbell candy canes read as Christmas by day, unlit. The Geetery is multicolor with 8 modes; the color question is on warm white vs cool white.

Why the unspecified 3 pack is the skip

The unspecified 3 pack is 10 ft, LED and sold as reusable, and its title names no frame material, no modes and no anchoring. The Geetery is the same size and names all three.

The rest of the front

An arch pairs with a lit porch and a figure or two on the lawn; see front porch Christmas decor and lighted outdoor figures.

Questions

How tall should a Christmas light arch be?

Tall enough to walk under comfortably. An 8 ft arch leaves 2 ft over a 6 ft adult at the top of the curve, less toward the legs; a 10 ft arch leaves room to spare.

How far apart should Christmas light arches be?

It depends on the effect. Three arches over 30 ft stand 15 ft apart as gateways; at 10 ft apart they read as one tunnel.

How do you anchor a light arch?

Stake each leg and add a guy line on the windward side. On paving, weight each leg with a sandbag. The Geetery set includes ground stakes.

Warm white or multicolor arches?

Match the house. The Mr. Christmas arch is warm white with C9-style bulbs, the Geetery is multicolor with 8 modes, and the candy cane arches are striped.
