The best lighted outdoor figures, ranked on LEDs per figure

A three-piece set sharing 60 LEDs is 20 each. That division is the whole category, and almost nobody does it before buying.

A lighted wire-frame figure is the quiet alternative to a yard inflatable: no blower, no continuous motor, nothing to deflate into a heap on a wet morning. It also publishes far more than an inflatable does, which makes it the easier category to buy well in.

One division decides it, and it is the one buyers skip: LED count divided by piece count. Two sets described identically as a “three-piece lighted reindeer family” can differ by three and a half times in lighting per figure.

#1 — A lawn that has to read from the road

NALONE 3D lighted reindeer family, 3 pieces, 210 LEDs, 4.7 ft

4.7 ft, 210 warm white LEDs, 3 pieces

Our pick. It publishes a height and an LED count, ships with its own stakes, and 3D is what makes a figure work on an open lawn.

Good

  • The most complete specification here: height, LED count, piece count and what is in the box
  • 3D reads correctly from every approach angle, which a flat frame does not
  • Stakes included, which matters because nobody publishes a wind rating for these

Watch out

  • 3D does not store flat
  • Warm white only, so it cannot be matched to a cool-white scheme

#2 — One large figure instead of a group

Pre-lit reindeer, 60 in, 160 LEDs, iridescent

60 in, 160 LEDs on a single figure

The one-piece answer. At 60 in with 160 LEDs it carries a lawn by itself, which three sparse figures do not.

Good

  • Publishes both height and LED count, and 160 on one figure is the highest density per piece here
  • Five feet is tall enough to hold a frontage on its own

Watch out

  • A single figure does not make a scene
  • No published ingress rating

#3 — A cool-white scheme

3D lighted deer family, 3 pieces, 4.3 ft, 180 cool white LEDs

4.3 ft, 180 cool white LEDs, 3 pieces

Buy it for the color temperature. Matching the figures to the roofline is the difference between a display and a collection.

Good

  • The only cool-white figure set here, which matters if the roofline is cool white
  • Publishes height, LED count and color temperature together

  • Cool white against warm-white roofline lighting reads as a mismatch
  • 3D does not store flat

#4 — A first lit figure, and flat storage

ATDAWN lighted 2D deer family, 60 LEDs

#5 — skip this

Dazzle Bright lighted 2D reindeer family, 3 pieces, 60 LEDs

3 pieces, 2D, 60 LEDs total

Skip this here. Sixty LEDs is the headline and three pieces is the fine print, which works out at 20 per figure. That is three and a half times less lighting than the top of this table on a product described the same way. A faint figure in a lit front yard is a shape, not a decoration.

Read the LED count carefully: three pieces sharing 60 LEDs is not the same as 60 each, and at 20 per figure it is a faint scene.

The 'LEDs per figure' column is our arithmetic and it is what changes the ranking. Three pieces sharing 60 LEDs is a very different object from one carrying 160.

The arithmetic

  1. NALONE: 210 LEDs across 3 pieces = 70 per figure
  2. Dazzle Bright: 60 LEDs across 3 pieces = 20 per figure
  3. 70 / 20 = 3.5
  4. Single 60 in reindeer: 160 LEDs on one figure

Three and a half times the lighting per figure between the top and bottom of this table, at the same headline description.

The NALONE set wins because it publishes the most complete specification here — height, LED count, piece count and what is in the box — and because 70 LEDs per figure is enough to read from the road.

2D or 3D, and what you are really choosing

A 2D figure is a flat frame. It reads correctly from directly in front, disappears from the side, and stores flat — which in a small home is the entire argument.

A 3D figure reads from every approach angle, which matters on a corner plot or a lawn people walk past rather than drive past. It does not fold, and a three-piece 3D set is a real storage commitment.

If the frontage is seen from one direction, 2D is the rational choice and the ATDAWN deer does it with a published LED count. If people walk past, buy 3D.

Stakes are the specification nobody reads

Wire frames have far less sail area than an inflatable and also far less weight, and a frame that lifts in wind is the most common failure in this category.

The NALONE set and the 60-inch reindeer both publish stakes as included, and that is worth more than a few extra LEDs. Nobody in this category publishes a wind rating so we print none — but a figure supplied with its own anchoring is a figure the maker expects you to anchor.

Placing them so they read as a scene

  • Face 2D figures square to the main viewing direction. Angled, they simply vanish.
  • Group and overlap slightly rather than spacing evenly. A family reads as a scene when the figures cluster and as a row of objects when they are evenly spaced.
  • Keep them off the walking route. A wire frame is the easiest thing in a display to walk into after dark.
  • Stake everything, including the light ones.

A lit frame draws very little compared with an inflatable blower, which makes it the easy piece to add to an existing circuit — run the numbers on the load calculator. The inflatable alternative is on Christmas inflatables, and anchoring either format is on anchoring a yard piece.

Questions

Are 2D or 3D lighted deer better?

2D reads correctly from one direction and stores flat; 3D reads from every angle and does not fold. Choose 2D for a frontage seen from a straight road, 3D for a corner plot or anywhere people walk past.

How many LEDs should a lighted reindeer have?

Work it per figure, not per set. A three-piece set with 210 LEDs is 70 each; a three-piece set with 60 LEDs is 20 each — three and a half times less lighting on an identically described product.

Do lighted outdoor figures use much electricity?

Far less than an inflatable, because there is no blower running continuously. LED frames are among the easiest pieces to add to an existing display circuit.

Do I need to stake a wire-frame figure?

Yes. They have less sail area than an inflatable but also much less weight, and the sets that ship with stakes are worth more than the ones that do not for exactly that reason.
