The best Christmas garage door decorations, sized to the door

On most house fronts the garage door is the biggest flat surface there is. Two formats cover it — a giant bow or a set of magnets — and both live or die on one figure the listings barely publish.

Arrowbash giant red Christmas bow, 51 x 78 in

Walk to the end of your drive and look back at the house. On a typical American front the garage door is somewhere between a quarter and a third of everything you can see — a flat, pale rectangle wider than the front door, the windows and the porch put together. It is also, on nine fronts out of ten in December, completely undecorated.

There are two honest ways to fix that, and neither involves drilling into a door that has to roll up every morning: a giant bow, or a set of magnets. The whole decision is scale, and scale is arithmetic you can do with a tape measure before you order anything.

#1 — A single garage door

Good

  • Publishes two dimensions, which is the only way to judge a bow against a door before it arrives
  • At 51 in across it covers about half the width of a standard single garage door, which is the proportion that reads as deliberate
  • Red is the one bow color that works on a white, almond or wood-grain door

Watch out

  • The listing does not say which figure is the width and which is the streamer drop, so plan for either
  • No fixing method published, and a garage door is the one surface where that matters
  • No material published, so there is nothing to judge weather tolerance on

Good

  • The only bow here sold explicitly for a garage door rather than for doors in general
  • 72 in across is a bow a 16 ft double door can carry without looking like an afterthought
  • Deep red reads warmer than a bright red against a cream or wood-grain door

Watch out

  • Stock was down to 12 when we checked
  • Same ambiguity as the others: two figures, no statement of which is the width
  • On a single 8 ft door this is too much bow — three quarters of the width

Good

  • 32 in is a figure, which almost no magnet set in this category gives you — most publish only a piece count
  • Eight pieces at that scale builds one large figure rather than scattering small stickers
  • Magnets come off in January in about two minutes and leave nothing behind

Watch out

  • Only works on a steel door, and the listing does not say so — test with a fridge magnet first
  • No pull strength published, which is what decides whether it survives the door rolling up
  • A single snowman is the whole decoration; it does not scale to a double door

Good

  • 33 pieces is enough to spread across a 16 ft double door at a sensible spacing
  • Mixed designs mean the arrangement is yours rather than the manufacturer's
  • The cheapest way to cover a large door, and completely reversible

Watch out

  • No piece size published at all, so the pieces may be fridge-magnet small on a door seen from the street
  • Steel doors only, unstated
  • Sold as refrigerator stickers as much as garage decor, which tells you something about the scale

CraftyDream Christmas red bow garage door decoration, with light

Lit bow with no published dimensions

Our skip, and reluctantly, because a lit bow is a good idea. On a page where the door width is the whole question, a bow that publishes no width cannot be the recommendation.

Good

  • The only lit bow in this field, and light is what makes a garage door read after 5 pm

Watch out

  • No dimensions published on a product whose only job is to span a door
  • No power detail: battery or mains is the difference between a decoration you can hang and one you cannot
  • No fixing method, so you cannot tell whether it is magnetic, hooked or tied

How we ranked these

Published size first, because a decoration on a garage door is read from the street and anything undersized simply disappears. Then the fixing, because this is the one surface in the house that moves. Then whether the listing admits what the door has to be made of — and not one magnet listing here does.

We do not rank on design. A red bow is a red bow and a snowman is a snowman; the listings describe them accurately and the choice is yours.

Three of the five publish a size and none publishes a fixing method. The two bows publish a pair of dimensions without saying which one is the width — plan for either.

How big the decoration has to be

Garage doors come in two standard widths and the difference between them is the whole purchase. A single door is 8 ft across; a double is 16 ft. Both are usually 7 ft tall.

The arithmetic

  1. Single garage door: 96 in wide
  2. Arrowbash bow at 51 in across: 51 / 96 = 53 percent of the width
  3. Double garage door: 192 in wide
  4. Moucuny bow at 72 in across: 72 / 192 = 38 percent of the width
  5. The same 72 in bow on a single door: 72 / 96 = 75 percent

A bow that reads as deliberate covers somewhere between a third and a half of the door width. The 51 in bow is right for a single door and the 72 in bow for a double; put the 72 in bow on a single door and it stops being a decoration and becomes upholstery.

Note what we are not doing: both bow listings publish two figures and neither says which is the width. We have read the smaller number as the width and the larger as the drop, because that is how a bow with streamers is built — but it is an assumption, and if it matters to you, ask the seller before ordering.

The magnet test to run before you order anything magnetic

This is the single biggest trap in the category and not one listing mentions it. Magnets hold on steel. A great many garage doors are not steel: aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl-skinned and timber doors are all common, and all of them will drop a magnet set straight onto the driveway.

The test takes ten seconds. Take a fridge magnet out to the garage and press it on the door, about halfway up, away from any hinge or frame. If it holds its own weight, the door is steel and magnets will work. If it slides or falls, buy a bow instead — and if it holds weakly, remember that a 32 in magnet panel weighs considerably more than a fridge magnet.

The door moves, which rules out most fixings

A sectional garage door rolls up and over on a radius. That has three consequences nobody thinks about until the first morning.

Anything over a hinge line gets folded. A door has three or four horizontal panel joints, and each one folds through ninety degrees every time the door opens. A magnet spanning a joint is a magnet that gets peeled off; a bow fixed across one gets creased.

Anything on the top panel goes into the ceiling. When the door is open, the top panel is horizontal and close to the garage ceiling. A bow on the top panel is a crushed bow.

Nothing goes in the track or the opener path. Ribbon, cord and streamers near the vertical track are what jam a door, and a jammed door with a motor on it is an expensive morning.

In practice that means decorate the middle panels, keep the fixing inside a single panel where you can, and if the bow has long streamers, let them hang down the face rather than across a joint. The same no-permanent-fixing logic applies to the rest of a rented or unmarkable front: Christmas decorations for renters covers the fixings that leave nothing behind, and no-drill Christmas lights covers the lighting equivalent.

How many magnets a door takes

Magnet sets are sold by piece count, which tells you nothing on its own. Convert it to spacing against your own door and the right pack size becomes obvious.

The arithmetic

  1. Double door: 192 in wide, four panels tall
  2. A 33-piece set spread across it: 192 / 33 = one piece every 5.8 in across a single row
  3. Spread over three usable panel rows instead: 11 pieces a row, one every 17 in
  4. A single door at 96 in with the same set: 11 pieces a row, one every 8.7 in

Thirty-three small pieces is one row of clutter on a double door and a reasonable three-row scatter on a single one. If the pieces are small and the door is big, buy two sets or buy the large-panel set instead.

That is the honest case for the 8-piece 32 in snowman over the 33-piece mixed set on a big door: eight large pieces read from the road, and thirty-three small ones read from the driveway. The same distance principle runs through Christmas yard decorations for a large lawn.

Lighting a garage door without touching it

A bow and a magnet set both go dark at dusk, which is when the front is actually being looked at. None of these decorations solves that, and the fix is not to light the decoration — it is to light the door.

Two ways that do not involve fixing anything to a moving surface. Run the roofline above the door, which throws enough spill to read the bow — the best outdoor Christmas lights and light clips cover that. Or put a spotlight on the ground aimed up at the door, which is the cheapest way to make a flat surface interesting after dark: Christmas spotlights ranks the plug-in field and solar spotlights the battery one.

Why the lit bow is the skip

The CraftyDream lit bow is the only lit bow in this field, and in principle it is exactly what the section above asks for. In practice its listing publishes no size, no power source and no fixing method — three unknowns on a product whose entire job is to span a door of a known width and survive being folded.

On a page where the deciding figure is the door width, a bow that will not state a width cannot be the recommendation. If you want light on the door, light the door.

Storage, and the one real advantage of this category

Everything here folds flat. A giant bow collapses into a bag, a magnet set stacks like coasters, and the whole garage door display takes less space than one wreath box. In a category where the tree bag alone is 26 cubic feet, that is worth noting — see how much storage space do I need.

Two practical notes for January. Dry the bow before it goes away; outdoor fabric bows hold water in the knot and that is where mildew starts. And keep magnets flat and separated rather than in a heap, because a stack of magnets dragged apart takes the printed surface with it. Where the box itself should live is on attic, garage or basement.

How the garage fits the rest of the front

The garage door is a supporting player, not the star. If the door gets a bow, the front door should get something that rhymes with it rather than competes — Christmas door decorations and swag or wreath cover that choice. The roofline above ties the two together, and on a wide single-story front that run is longer than people expect: Christmas lights for a ranch house has the length arithmetic.

Questions

›What size bow do I need for a garage door?

Roughly a third to a half of the door width. On a single 8 ft door that is about 48 to 50 in across; on a 16 ft double door, about 64 to 90 in. Measure the door rather than guessing from the photograph.

›Will magnets stick to my garage door?

Only if it is steel. Press a fridge magnet on the middle of the door: if it holds its own weight you are fine, and if it slides off, the door is aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl or wood and you need a bow instead. No magnet listing in this category mentions this.

›Can you decorate a garage door that opens every day?

Yes, with two rules: keep the decoration inside a single panel rather than across a hinge line, and keep everything out of the vertical track and away from the top panel, which ends up against the ceiling when the door is open.

›How many magnets do I need for a double garage door?

A 33-piece set spread over three panel rows of a 16 ft door is one piece every 17 inches, which is a reasonable scatter. If the pieces are small, two sets or one large-panel set reads better from the street.
