The best Christmas placemats, measured against the table and the runner
Depth is the figure that decides everything and almost nobody thinks about it. On a 36 in table with a standard runner there are 11.5 inches a side, and every mat in this field is deeper than that.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Buy the COTTON CRAFT tartan six-pack: it publishes both its 13 x 19 in dimensions and its pure cotton material, which only half this field manages, and six mats is exactly what a 6 ft table takes at three a side. If the table has children at it, the Artoid Mode vinyl set is the better buy — 12 in deep, which is the shallowest rectangle here, wipe-clean, and the only mat on the page with a published non-slip claim.
The thing worth knowing before you spend anything is that a placemat has two dimensions and only one of them is about the place setting. The length runs along the table edge and decides how many fit. The depth runs toward the middle of the table, and it decides whether your mats and your runner can coexist. On a standard 36 in table with the 13 in runner this site already calls standard, there are 11.5 in a side — and every single mat in this field is deeper than that.

The picks in full

#1 — A six-seat table where the mats go in the wash
COTTON CRAFT Christmas plaid placemats, 6 pack, 13 x 19 in
13 x 19 in, 6 pack, pure cotton tartan
8.3
/ 10
The pick. It publishes the two figures that matter, it is the cheapest 13 x 19 here by a wide margin, and cotton is the honest answer for a table people actually eat at.

Good
- Publishes both the dimensions and the material, which only half this field does — and on a table, the dimension is the whole decision
- Pure cotton is the one material here that goes in a normal wash and comes out flat, which matters on the surface most likely to meet gravy
- Six mats is the right count for a 6 ft table at three a side by our arithmetic, so one pack dresses the table
Watch out
- At 13 in deep it is the deeper of the two rectangle sizes here, so it overlaps a standard 13 in runner by about 1.5 in a side on a 36 in table
- Publishes no care instructions and no heat rating, so treat it as decorative rather than as a trivet
- Woven cotton stains where vinyl wipes — this is the mat you accept will need washing, not the one that shrugs off a spill

#2 — A table with children at it
Artoid Mode vinyl Christmas placemats, set of 6, 12 x 18 in
12 x 18 in, 6 pack, washable woven vinyl, non-slip

The practical pick, and the right footprint. If the table has children at it, the wipe-clean surface and the published non-slip claim are worth more than the look of linen.

Good
- Twelve inches deep is the shallowest rectangle here, which is what makes it the one that fits alongside a 13 in runner on a 36 in table with the least overlap
- Woven vinyl wipes rather than washes, which on a Christmas table is the difference between a spill and an evening
- The only mat here that publishes a non-slip claim, and a mat that slides under a carved plate is the one that ends up on the floor
Watch out
- Publishes no heat rating, so despite being the obvious candidate it should not be treated as a trivet for a hot dish
- Vinyl reads as practical rather than as formal — this is a kitchen-table mat, not a dining-room one
- A printed plastic weave will not take a hot serving dish or a cigarette burn the way cloth or cork would

SLKQG wipe-clean PVC Christmas placemats, set of 4, 17 x 12 in
17 x 12 in, set of 4, heat-resistant PVC

Good
- The only mat on this page that makes a heat-resistance claim at all, which is the figure that decides whether a serving dish can go down on it
- Twelve inches deep like the Artoid, so it has the same minimal overlap with a standard runner
- Wipe clean and washable both published, which is unusual — most listings claim one or the other
Watch out
- Publishes no temperature limit behind the heat-resistance claim, so it is a direction rather than a number — do not put a roasting dish straight from the oven on it
- A set of four seats a four-seater; a 6 ft table needs two packs and leaves two spare
- Seventeen inches is an inch shorter along the edge than the 12 x 18 mats, which is only visible if you mix the two

#4 — Seating four a side on a 6 ft table
Niviy round Christmas placemats, set of 4, 15 in

Good
- Fifteen inches across is narrower along the table edge than any rectangle here, which by our arithmetic is what lets four mats and a gap fit a 6 ft table side where an 18 in mat cannot
- A round mat under a round plate is the one shape pairing that never looks misaligned, because there is no edge to line up
- The lowest published price on this page
Watch out
- Fifteen inches of depth is the deepest footprint here, so on a 36 in table it overlaps a standard 13 in runner by about 3.5 in a side — round mats and a runner are close to mutually exclusive on a narrow table
- Publishes neither a material nor any care instruction, so how it handles a spill is unknown
- Four to a pack, so a six-seat table needs two packs

#5 — The same size from a name the rest of the table can match
DII farmhouse Christmas plaid placemat set, 6 count, 13 x 19 in
13 x 19 in, 6 count, red and green plaid
6.0

Buy it for the matching collection, not for the specification. At this size the cheaper tartan publishes more about itself and costs noticeably less.

Good
- DII sells a whole tabletop collection in this plaid — runners, napkins, towels — so this is the mat to buy if the rest of the table has to match exactly
- Publishes the same 13 x 19 in footprint as the COTTON CRAFT, which makes the two a genuine like-for-like on everything except price and material
- Six to a pack, so a 6 ft table is one purchase
Watch out
- Publishes no material at all, which on a textile is the figure you most want — you cannot tell from the listing whether it washes like cotton or not
- Clearly the most expensive 13 x 19 in set here for a published specification that is thinner than the cheaper one's
- Same 13 in depth, so the same runner overlap on a 36 in table

#6 — skip this
SHACOS woven vinyl Christmas place mats, set of 6
Set of 6, woven vinyl, stain resistant; no dimensions published
6.8
/ 10
Skip this here. It is a reasonable woven vinyl mat with a published stain-resistance claim, and it publishes no dimensions at all. On a product whose entire job is to occupy a measured piece of table — alongside a runner, opposite another mat, four or six to a side — a listing that withholds the size cannot be planned with. Every other mat here tells you how big it is.
A perfectly reasonable mat that cannot be bought on a number. On a page where the dimension decides everything, a listing that withholds it is the skip.

Good
- Woven vinyl with a published stain-resistance claim, which is the right material for a table that will take a spill
- Rated for indoor and outdoor use, so the same mats work for a porch table in summer
- Six to a pack from a brand that shows up repeatedly in this category
Watch out
- Publishes no dimensions at all — on a product whose entire job is to occupy a measured piece of table, that is the one omission you cannot work around
- Cannot be planned against a runner, against a table width or against the other mats on this page
- No heat rating either, despite being a wipe-clean vinyl where you might reasonably expect one

How we ranked these
Published dimensions first, because a placemat is a measured object and three of the six listings here are the only reason this page can say anything at all. Then material, because it decides whether a spill is wiped or washed. Then set size against a real table. Then any care or heat claim the listing is willing to make.
We have not handled any of these. Every figure in the table below is one a listing prints, and every piece of arithmetic is ours and labeled as such.
| Placemat | Dimensions | Set | Material | Care | Heat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| COTTON CRAFT tartan | 13 x 19 in | 6 | Pure cotton | Not stated | Not stated |
| Artoid Mode vinyl | 12 x 18 in | 6 | Woven vinyl | Washable | Not stated |
| SLKQG PVC | 17 x 12 in | 4 | PVC | Wipe clean, washable | Stated |
| Niviy round | 15 in round | 4 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| DII farmhouse plaid | 13 x 19 in | 6 | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| SHACOS woven vinyl | Not stated | 6 | Woven vinyl | Wipe clean, stain resistant | Not stated |
Five of six publish a size and three publish a material. Exactly one makes any heat claim, and none of them quantifies it. The two 13 x 19 in sets are the same footprint from two brands, which is what makes material the only variable between them.

The depth figure, and the runner collision
This is the arithmetic this category never shows you. A placemat is laid with its long edge parallel to the table edge, so the short dimension is the depth — how far the mat reaches toward the middle. Two mats facing each other eat twice that depth out of the table width, and whatever is left is the centre strip a runner has to live in.
The arithmetic
- Standard dining table width: 36 in (the same reference this site's runner page uses)
- Standard runner width: 13 in, published as the standard on that page
- 36 - 13 = 23 in of table left, which is 11.5 in a side
- 12 in deep mat: 12 - 11.5 = overlaps the runner by about 0.5 in a side
- 13 in deep mat: 13 - 11.5 = overlaps by about 1.5 in a side
- 15 in round mat: 15 - 11.5 = overlaps by about 3.5 in a side
Every mat in this field is deeper than the space a standard runner leaves on a standard table. Ours, from the published mat dimensions and the 13 in runner width. The 12 in vinyl is the only one where the overlap is small enough to read as deliberate layering rather than as a mistake; the 15 in round and a runner are close to mutually exclusive on a 36 in table.
That is not a contradiction of the Christmas table runners page, which says a 13 in runner leaves room for place settings either side on a 36 in table. It does: 11.5 in takes a dinner plate and cutlery comfortably. What it does not take is a full-depth placemat. If you want both, you need a wider table, a narrower runner, or the decision to overlap on purpose — mats sitting on top of the runner at each end is a normal styling choice and it looks fine, as long as you chose it.
How many fit along the table
The long dimension decides the seating, and this is where the round mat earns its place. Our allowance here is a 2 in gap between mats, so a setting is not touching its neighbour:
The arithmetic
- A 6 ft (72 in) table side, with our 2 in gap between mats
- Total needed = (mats x width) + (2 in x gaps between them)
- 18 in mats, 3 a side: (3 x 18) + (2 x 2) = 58 in — fits, 14 in spare
- 18 in mats, 4 a side: (4 x 18) + (2 x 3) = 78 in — does not fit
- 19 in mats, 4 a side: (4 x 19) + (2 x 3) = 82 in — does not fit
- 15 in round, 4 a side: (4 x 15) + (2 x 3) = 66 in — fits, 6 in spare
A 6 ft table takes three rectangles a side with room, or four touching edge to edge. The 15 in round is the only mat here that seats four a side with a gap — which is the real argument for a round mat, and not one any listing makes. Ours, from the published lengths and our own 2 in allowance.
That also settles the set-size question. Three a side on a 6 ft table is six seats, so a set of six dresses the table in one purchase. The two sets of four here cover a four-seater; for six seats you are buying two packs and keeping two mats spare, which is not a disaster but is worth knowing before the order.
Rectangle or round
Rectangles are the default because they echo the table and the plate sits square on them. Round mats solve two specific problems and create one.
They solve crowding, as the arithmetic above shows, and they solve alignment: a round plate on a round mat cannot look crooked, because there is no edge to line up against. What they create is the depth problem in its worst form — a 15 in circle is 15 in deep at its widest point, which on a 36 in table leaves 6 in in the middle and nothing like enough for a runner.
So the honest rule is that round mats suit a crowded table without a runner, and rectangles suit a table with a centre strip to protect. If your table is round rather than rectangular, round mats are the obvious match and the depth maths changes entirely — measure from the rim toward the centre and check two opposite mats still leave a gap.
Cloth that washes, or vinyl that wipes
This is the real decision once the size is settled, and it is a decision about who is sitting at the table rather than about how the mat looks.
The arithmetic
- Cotton or linen: washes flat, stains, needs a machine and a dry — the formal option
- Woven vinyl or PVC: wipes in seconds, does not stain, reads as practical
- Faux leather or PU: wipes, heavier, holds a crease where it has been folded
- A Christmas table sees gravy, red wine, candle wax and cranberry: all four stain cloth
Our reading: cloth for a table of adults where the mats will be washed afterwards anyway, vinyl for a table with children at it or a meal with gravy at it. The published material matters more than the published size here, and three of the six listings do not state one.
Three of the six mats on this page publish a material; three do not, including one of the two 13 x 19 in sets. That is what makes the COTTON CRAFT and the DII pair useful: same published footprint, and one of them tells you it is pure cotton while the other tells you nothing, at a noticeably higher price. If the rest of your table is already DII — they sell runners and napkins in the same plaid — that is a legitimate reason to pay it. Specification is not.
The heat claim, and why none of them is a number
One mat here says heat resistant. That is the SLKQG PVC set, and it is worth something, because a Christmas table has serving dishes going down on it rather than just plates.
What it is not is a temperature. No listing in this category publishes a figure in degrees, a duration, or a test standard, so “heat resistant” means the manufacturer is comfortable with a warm plate and nothing more can honestly be inferred. A dish straight out of a 350 °F oven belongs on a trivet, on any mat on this page. The same caution applies to candles: a lit candle on a vinyl mat is a melted mat, and the flameless alternatives are on flameless candles.
What goes on top
A placemat is the bottom layer of a place setting, and the layers above it have their own figures. A dinner plate is commonly 10 to 11 in across, which sits inside every mat here with an inch or two to spare on a 12 in depth — tight, but correct, because the plate is supposed to sit on the mat rather than float in the middle of it.
Above that comes the napkin, and a ring if you use one. The three-piece version of a holiday table — runner, centerpiece and a ring at each place — is already worked out on Thanksgiving table decorations, and the figures there transfer directly: the ring diameter has to clear the folded napkin, and the napkin sits on the mat rather than beside it if the mat is only 12 in deep.
The one layering mistake worth naming is doubling up patterns. A tartan mat under a tartan runner under a patterned plate is three competing grids in 12 inches. Pick one patterned layer and let the other two be plain. The same restraint argument runs Christmas pillow covers, where the same mistake happens on a sofa.
Storing them flat
Placemats are the Christmas textile most likely to come out of the box creased, and a creased mat does not flatten under a plate — it rocks it. Vinyl takes a permanent fold line; cotton takes a crease that needs ironing.
So they want to be stored flat or rolled, not folded: flat in a drawer or a shallow box, or rolled around a cardboard tube with the pattern outward. That is the same habit that keeps a runner usable, and the general approach to Christmas textiles and the boxes that suit them is on labeling and inventory and china storage containers, which is where the rest of the table usually ends up.
So which one
For a six-seat table of adults, the COTTON CRAFT tartan: the size and the material are both published and it is the cheapest 13 x 19 in set here. For a table with children, the Artoid Mode vinyl, for the 12 in depth and the non-slip claim. For serving dishes, the SLKQG for its heat claim, read as a direction rather than a number. For four a side on a long table, the Niviy round — and then skip the runner. For a matching collection, the DII, knowing you are paying for the collection rather than for the specification.
And if a listing will not tell you how big the mat is, buy a different one. That is the whole reason the SHACOS set is the skip on this page: it is not a bad mat, it is an unplannable one.
Questions
›What size are Christmas placemats?
The rectangles on this page are 12 x 18 in, 13 x 19 in and 17 x 12 in, and the round one is 15 in across. The long dimension runs along the table edge and decides how many fit; the short one is the depth and decides whether a runner still fits down the middle.
›Can you use placemats and a table runner together?
On a 36 in table, not without overlap. A standard 13 in runner leaves 11.5 in a side, and every placemat in this field is deeper than that — by about half an inch for a 12 in mat and about 3.5 in for a 15 in round. Either choose the shallowest mats and accept a small deliberate overlap, use a wider table, or drop the runner.
›How many placemats fit on a 6 foot table?
Three rectangles a side with a gap, or four touching edge to edge. With our 2 in gap allowance, three 18 in mats need 58 in of a 72 in side; four would need 78 in. The 15 in round is the only mat here that seats four a side with a gap, at 66 in.
›Are cloth or vinyl Christmas placemats better?
Vinyl if there are children at the table or gravy on the menu — it wipes in seconds and does not stain. Cloth if the mats are going in the wash afterwards anyway and you want the table to read as formal. The more important point is that three of the six listings here do not publish a material at all.
›Can you put a hot dish on a Christmas placemat?
Use a trivet. One mat on this page states heat resistance and not one publishes a temperature, a duration or a test standard, so the claim means a warm plate is fine and nothing more. A dish straight from the oven will mark any mat here.
