The best Christmas table runners, measured against the table
A 72 in runner is not a 72 in table. Overhang, width and whether it survives gravy decide which one goes down for dinner.
By Sawyer V. · Published

A runner is the fastest way to dress a table that still has to hold dinner. It covers the middle, leaves the place settings on bare wood, and goes in the wash afterward — which a full tablecloth on Christmas Day rarely survives without.
Nearly every runner sold is 13 x 72 in, and that single size decides which table it suits. We did the overhang arithmetic first. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these
Published dimensions first — both of them, not just the length. Then the wash method, because this is the one piece of Christmas fabric that meets gravy. Then how long the design can stay on the table.
| Runner | Size | Fabric | Care | Design |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RABUSOFA | 13 x 72 in | 100% spun polyester | Machine washable | Trees on buffalo plaid |
| Nepnuser | 13 x 72 in | Not stated | Hand wash, lay flat | Buffalo check |
| YOPINCO | 13 x 72 in | Not stated | Not stated | Baubles and pine cones |
| Heirloom Haven | 13 x 72 in | Not stated | Not stated | Holly, berries, pine |
| FreeNook | 72 in long, width not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Red pine trees |
Four of the five publish both dimensions. Only one publishes its fabric.

Which table a 72 in runner fits
The arithmetic
- A runner should drop 6 to 12 in past each end of the table
- Runner 72 in, drop 6 in each end: 72 - 12 = 60 in of table
- Runner 72 in, drop 12 in each end: 72 - 24 = 48 in of table
- On a 72 in (6 ft) table: 72 - 72 = 0 in of drop
A 72 in runner is cut for a 48 to 60 in table — a four to six seater. On a 6 ft table it stops dead at both edges and reads as a mat, not a runner. For a 6 ft table, look for 90 in; for an 8 ft table, 108 in.
Width matters just as much. At 13 in, a runner leaves room for place settings either side on a 36 in wide table, which is why it is the standard. A runner whose width the listing does not publish — the FreeNook, and that is why it is the skip — could land anywhere between a scarf and a half tablecloth.
The gravy test
The RABUSOFA is the only runner here that names its fabric, 100% spun polyester, and says it is machine washable without shrinking or fading. On the table that hosts Christmas dinner, that is the spec that matters most. The Nepnuser is hand wash and lay flat, which is a real commitment on December 26.
Plaid runs longer than print
The Nepnuser buffalo check carries no Christmas motif at all, so it goes down in October and comes up in February. The printed runners — baubles, holly, trees — are December pieces. The botanical Heirloom Haven print sits in between: holly and pine read as winter greenery into January.
The rest of the table
A runner is the base layer; the centerpiece sits on it. See Christmas table centerpieces for what goes in the middle, and Thanksgiving table decorations for the same table five weeks earlier. The good dishes that come out with it store in the cases on china storage containers.
Questions
›What size table runner do I need?
Long enough to drop 6 to 12 in past each end. A 72 in runner suits a 48 to 60 in table; a 6 ft table wants about 90 in, and an 8 ft table about 108 in.
›How wide should a Christmas table runner be?
13 in is the standard, and it leaves room for place settings either side on a 36 in wide table. One listing here does not publish a width at all.
›Can Christmas table runners go in the washing machine?
The RABUSOFA publishes machine washable, 100% spun polyester. The Nepnuser is hand wash and lay flat; the rest do not state a care method.
›Runner or tablecloth for Christmas dinner?
A runner, if the table is worth showing. It dresses the middle, keeps place settings on bare wood, and is small enough to wash after the meal.
