Flocked or unflocked: what the snow is covering up

At 7.5 ft the flocked trees here publish 1,346 to 1,446 tips. The unflocked ones publish 2,250 to 2,652. That gap is the comparison.

A decorated christmas tree in a living room at night

Flocking is a coating sprayed onto branch tips to imitate snow. It changes how a tree looks from across a room, it changes what falls on the carpet, and — the part nobody mentions — it changes what the manufacturer needs to put on the frame to make the tree look full.

Put the published tip counts side by side at the same height and the pattern is hard to unsee. Flocked trees in this field publish around 1,400 tips at 7.5 ft. Unflocked trees at the same height publish 2,250 and up.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

How we compared them

Same height, published figures only: branch tips, tips per foot, and light count where the tree is pre-lit. Then the two costs that are specific to flocking — shedding, and what it does to the lights.

The density gap, in one line

The arithmetic

  1. Densest unflocked tree here: 2,514 tips over 7.5 ft = 335 tips per foot
  2. Densest flocked tree here: 1,446 tips over 7.5 ft = 193 tips per foot
  3. 2,514 / 1,446 = 1.7
  4. 335 - 193 = 142 fewer tips on every foot of tree

The unflocked trees here carry about 1.7 times the foliage at the same height. Flocking fills the gaps visually — white coating on white space reads as snow rather than as a hole — which is exactly why a flocked tree can get away with fewer tips.

That is not an accusation; it is a trade, and for a lot of rooms it is a good one. A flocked tree at 1,400 tips can look fuller than an unflocked tree at 1,400 tips, because the coating hides the frame. It just will not look as full as an unflocked tree at 2,500. If tip count is how you judge a tree, our tree size and tip count page has the whole scale.

Shedding is the flocked tax

Flock sheds. It sheds most in the first season, it sheds every time the tree is fluffed, and it sheds onto whatever is under the tree — which is usually a skirt, a collar and a pile of presents. There is no listing figure for it and there never will be.

Two practical consequences. Put a sheet down for assembly, and expect to vacuum on day one. And think about what goes underneath: a collar rather than a skirt is easier to shake out, and storage matters more on a flocked tree than an unflocked one because compression is what breaks the coating loose.

Pre-lit flocked, or unlit and your own strings

Both flocked trees here are pre-lit, and both unflocked ones are unlit. That is typical, and it matters more than it looks: on a flocked tree, re-lighting it yourself in year five means dragging strings through a coating that is already loose. On an unlit tree, adding and replacing strings is routine.

The pre-lit-against-unlit decision, including what happens when a pre-lit section fails, is on pre-lit or unlit. If you are buying unlit, plan about 100 lights per vertical foot using how many Christmas lights do I need.

Who should buy which

Buy flocked if you want the look and you are decorating lightly — a flocked tree carries fewer ornaments well, because the coating is the decoration. Accept the shedding, buy warm white, and keep it out of a room where it gets knocked.

Buy unflocked if you hang a lot of ornaments, if the tree needs to look full on its own, or if you want to control the lighting yourself. The heavy-ornament case in particular wants tips and hinges rather than coating: trees for heavy ornaments works through branch load, and the flocked field on its own is ranked on flocked Christmas trees.

Good

  • Publishes tips, lights and pinecone count, which is unusual in flocked trees
  • 500 lights on 1,346 tips is a light every 2.7 tips — dense for a pre-lit tree
  • Warm white rather than the cold white most flocked trees ship with

Watch out

  • 1,346 tips is around half what a comparable unflocked tree publishes at the same height
  • Flocking sheds, and it sheds most in the first year and every time the tree is moved
  • No published stand detail

Good

  • 2,250 published tips at 300 per foot, which is a normal-density full tree and enough to carry heavy ornaments without the branch line showing through
  • Hinged branches on a metal stand, both published — hinged is the build that matters here, because a hook-on branch rotates under a heavy ornament and a hinged one does not
  • The lowest price of any tree here with over 2,000 published tips, by about $60 — the one cheaper tree on this page publishes 1,400

Watch out

  • No published width, so the floor space it needs is unknown before it arrives — and it is now the only tree on this page in that position, where the two National Tree firs both publish 59 in
  • PVC tips only, where the Downswept Douglas Fir publishes crush-resistant polyethylene — PVC tips take a set and do not spring back after a season in a box
  • 300 tips per foot, fewer than the top two
  • No published fluffing time, where the listing it replaces stated 45 to 60 minutes

Specs from the Amazon listing (ASIN B07ZQK547Q), verified via the Creators API 2026-10-10. Replaces B0DMDWTZ4Y, the Best Choice Products Premium Nordic Fir, which Amazon now shows as currently unavailable. Best Choice Products has no live Nordic Fir, and no live 7.5 ft tree in this field publishes a width at all, so this is a cross-brand replacement chosen on the figure the page is built on: it publishes exactly 2,250 branch tips, along with 7.5 ft, hinged branches, a full shape, PVC needles and a metal stand. The 52 in width, the 90 in with-stand height, the flame-retardant PVC description and the 45 to 60 minute fluffing time are NOT published on this listing and have all been removed rather than carried across.

Questions

›Do flocked Christmas trees have fewer branch tips?

In this field, yes. At 7.5 ft the flocked trees publish 1,346 and 1,446 tips; the unflocked ones publish 2,250 and 2,514. The coating hides gaps that bare branches would show.

›Do flocked trees shed a lot?

Most in the first season and every time the tree is fluffed or compressed. No listing publishes a figure for it. Assemble on a sheet and plan to vacuum.

›Should a flocked tree have warm white or cool white lights?

Warm white. Cool white on flocking reads blue and clinical; warm white reads like lit snow. Check which one a pre-lit flocked tree publishes before ordering.

›Can you hang heavy ornaments on a flocked tree?

Less happily than on a dense unflocked tree: fewer tips means fewer places to spread the load, and pushing hooks through flocking loosens it. For heavy collections, buy tips and hinges instead of coating.
