Framed around the actual display period it resolves quickly, because a fall porch is out for about twelve weeks and that is longer than a cut pumpkin is a decoration.

The arithmetic

A fall porch is on display roughly twice as long as a Christmas one, in weather that starts with September sun and ends in November frost.
No cut pumpkin looks the same on day 85 as on day one, and a carved one has a far shorter window than an uncarved one. That is not a criticism of real pumpkins — it is a statement about what they are. It does mean that a display planned around them is a display you are committing to refresh.

Where artificial is clearly right
Three situations, and they are common ones.
Anything lit that stays out. A real pumpkin with a candle in it is a two-week piece at best. The 17-inch three-tier lantern publishes a waterproof ETL-certified cord and two safety fuses, which is a specification about surviving the conditions rather than a claim about looking good on day one.
Anything on a step or a path edge. Real pumpkins are heavy, get moved by every passing visitor, and eventually soften and leak where they sit. Path-edge lighting is better served by resin solar pumpkins that stay where they are put — with the standing condition that solar needs direct daylight on the panel.

Where real is still the right answer
