Inflatables or lighted figures: height for an evening, or a shape that keeps it

An inflatable is tall, cheap per foot and needs a blower running all night. A lighted figure is shorter, quieter, and still the same shape in year five.

By Sawyer V. · Published

A house outlined in warm string lights at dusk, seen from the street

Two ways to put a character in a front yard. An inflatable gets you eight feet of Santa for the price of a wreath, and it only exists while a blower is running. A lighted figure — a wire-frame deer, a fabric-over-metal nutcracker — is half the height for several times the money and holds its shape whether or not it is plugged in.

Both are bought on impulse from a photograph. The published figures tell a more useful story about which one is still in use in three years.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

How we compared them

Published height, because scale is the reason either exists. Published LED count, because the figures are lit and the inflatables are lit from inside. Weather rating where the listing gives one. Then the two things nobody puts on a box: what it takes to put up, and what it takes to store.

Height is the inflatable advantage and it is not close: 8 ft against 4.3 and 5 ft. The figures answer with published LED counts and, in one case, a stated weather claim.

Feet of presence per dollar

Scale is what makes a yard read from a moving car, and inflatables buy scale cheaply. That is the honest case for them and it is a strong one.

The arithmetic

  1. Inflatable: 8 ft of height in one object
  2. Deer family: 4.3 ft, but three separate pieces spread across a bed
  3. Nutcracker: 5 ft, and it reads as architecture beside a door rather than as a scene
  4. 8 / 4.3 = 1.9

An inflatable is nearly twice the height of the tallest figure here. A figure answers with placement rather than height: three deer at 4.3 ft occupy a whole bed, and a pair of 5 ft nutcrackers frames a door in a way nothing inflatable can.

The blower is the difference nobody plans for

An inflatable is a fan with a costume. The fan runs the entire time the decoration is up, which changes both the power arithmetic and the experience of standing next to it. A lighted figure draws LED current and nothing else.

Neither inflatable here publishes a blower wattage, which is the figure you would want for the load calculation. Our inflatable setup and anchoring page covers what the blower needs from the circuit and from the stakes, and yard display power works through a whole-yard total.

Storage is where figures lose and inflatables win

The trade reverses in January. An 8 ft inflatable folds into a bag the size of a pillow. A 5 ft nutcracker and a three-piece deer family take shelf space all year, and wire-frame figures bend if anything is stacked on them.

That is the practical calculation for a small garage: an inflatable costs you nothing in storage and everything in nightly power and wind risk; a figure costs you shelf space and nothing else. Work it out against what you actually have with how much storage space do I need.

Who should buy which

Buy an inflatable for maximum height on a budget, for a yard seen from the road, and if you have somewhere sheltered to stake it. Buy the one that publishes an ingress rating; the field is ranked on Christmas inflatables.

Buy a lighted figure if you want the display to look the same in year five, if the yard is windy, if the power outlet is already busy, or if the decoration sits close to the door where people see it at arm’s length. The field is on lighted outdoor figures and outdoor nutcrackers.

FunFanso 8 ft inflatable Santa, IP44 weatherproof

#1 — Anyone who wants a published weather rating

FunFanso 8 ft inflatable Santa, IP44 weatherproof

8 ft, IP44, built-in LED

Our pick, on the one line that separates these: it publishes an ingress rating and most do not.

Good

  • Publishes an IP44 rating, which most of this category does not
  • Same 8 ft height as the unrated sets, so the rating costs nothing in presence

Watch out

  • IP44 is rain, not standing water
  • No published blower wattage, so the circuit cannot be planned from the listing

Questions

›Are Christmas inflatables or lighted figures better value?

Inflatables buy height cheaply — 8 ft against about 5 ft for the figures here. Figures buy longevity: no blower running all night, nothing for wind to catch, and the same shape in year five.

›Do inflatables have to run all night?

They only exist while the blower runs, so they are up or they are a heap of fabric. That is the argument for putting one on a timer or a smart plug rather than leaving it on until dawn.

›Which is safer in wind, an inflatable or a lighted figure?

A staked metal-framed figure, comfortably. An 8 ft inflatable is a sail: stake every tether and deflate it in a storm.

›Which takes less storage space?

The inflatable, by a wide margin — it folds into a bag. Wire-frame figures and fabric-over-metal nutcrackers take shelf space all year and bend if anything is stacked on them.
