The best outdoor nutcrackers, for a door that wants a guard

A pair of lit nutcrackers flanking the front door is the classic Christmas porch. Frame, fabric and anchoring decide whether they are still standing in January.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Close-up of colored string lights against a dark background

The nutcracker soldier is the Christmas porch’s version of a doorman. A pair of them, one either side of the front door, is formal and friendly at once, and lit from inside they carry the porch after dark.

The category splits into lit frame figures — fabric over a wire or metal frame — and inflatables. Five below, ranked on build, lighting and anchoring.

Good

  • 6 ft is the tallest figure here, and it packs into a small box in January
  • Inflatables are the cheapest way to get this height

Watch out

  • An inflatable is a yard piece, not a porch soldier — it reads as a blow-up, not a figure
  • Blower draw not published; it runs all evening

A pair beside the door

The arithmetic

  1. Standard front door: 80 in tall
  2. 61 in nutcracker / 80 in = 76% of the door
  3. 5 ft (60 in) figure: 75%
  4. 4.25 ft (51 in): 64%

A 5 ft nutcracker stands about three-quarters of the door's height — tall enough to frame it, short enough not to dwarf it. That is the proportion the category has settled on.

Frame and fabric

The Tangkula publishes a powder-coated metal frame and fabric described as waterproof, windproof and snowproof, with stakes and zip ties to hold it. That is the construction that survives a December outdoors and comes out again next year. Buy two for the door.

The 61 in pair comes as a matched two in one box, with stakes and zip ties, and publishes less about its frame.

Inflatable nutcrackers

The HOMCOM is the tallest nutcracker here at 6 ft and packs into a small box in January. It reads as an inflatable, though, not a soldier — right for the yard, wrong for the door. Blower draw is not published; the load planning is on Christmas inflatables.

The rest of the porch

Nutcrackers either side of the door, a wreath on it, lit trees in urns, a spotlight on the lot. The pieces are on porch Christmas trees, Christmas door decorations and front porch Christmas decor, and other lit figures on lighted outdoor figures.

Questions

How tall should outdoor nutcrackers be?

About 5 ft for a pair beside a standard 80 in door — roughly three-quarters of the door’s height, which frames it without dwarfing it.

Can lighted nutcrackers stay outside all December?

One here publishes a powder-coated metal frame and weatherproof fabric, built for it. Others publish less; keep them under a porch roof if unsure.

How do you keep a nutcracker from blowing over on a porch?

Zip-tie it to a porch post or railing, or weight the base. Two sets here include zip ties and stakes.

Inflatable or lighted frame nutcracker?

A frame figure for the door — it looks like a soldier. An inflatable for the yard, where height matters more and it packs away small.
