The best porch Christmas trees, bought in pairs for the front door

Two lit trees in urns, one either side of the door. Height, lights per foot and a timer decide whether they look planned.

By Sawyer V. · Published

An evergreen wreath hanging on a wooden front door

A pair of lit trees in urns, one either side of the front door, is the most formal and most reliable Christmas porch there is. It frames the door, it lights the step, and it works on a porch of any size, from a townhouse stoop to a farmhouse veranda.

Every set here is a matched pair. What separates them is height, how many lights, and whether they switch themselves on. Five pairs below.

Every set is a pair. Lights per foot of height is our arithmetic. All are battery powered.

3 feet or 4 beside the door

The arithmetic

  1. Standard front door: 80 in tall
  2. 4 ft tree = 48 in = 60% of the door
  3. 3 ft tree = 36 in = 45% of the door
  4. Most urn bases add height the listings do not publish

A 4 ft tree reaches a little past halfway up the door — the classic proportion. A 3 ft tree sits lower and leaves room on a narrow stoop, where 4 ft trees crowd the door and the handle.

Lights per foot

The ENVEN carries 100 warm white LEDs on 4 ft, 25 per foot, and publishes a 6/18 timer and 3 AA cells per tree — the full picture. The Juegoal puts the same 100 on a 3 ft tree, 33 per foot, the densest here. Light density matters more on a porch tree than an indoor one: it is seen from the street, after dark, against a dark house.

A month on batteries

The arithmetic

  1. Thanksgiving to New Year: about 36 evenings
  2. 36 x 6 h timer = 216 hours per tree

Each tree runs about 216 hours through the season. No listing publishes battery life, so plan on rechargeables and a mid-December change. The trade-off is on battery vs plug-in decorations.

See battery vs plug-in decorations. If the display is multicolor, the dual-color pair switches between warm white and multicolor from a remote.

The rest of the door

Trees either side, a wreath on the door, a mat in front. The pieces are on Christmas door decorations, outdoor nutcrackers (the other classic door pair) and front porch Christmas decor. For a tree inside, at table height, see tabletop Christmas trees.

Questions

What size porch Christmas trees should I get?

4 ft for a standard door — a little past halfway up an 80 in door. 3 ft for a narrow stoop, where taller trees crowd the door.

How do porch Christmas trees get power?

Every pair here is battery powered, typically 3 AA per tree. One publishes a 6/18 timer, which runs each tree about 216 hours from Thanksgiving to New Year.

How do you keep porch trees from blowing over?

Weight the urns with sand or gravel. A 4 ft tree in a light urn catches wind like a sail.

Warm white or multicolor porch trees?

Match the rest of the display. One pair here switches between warm white and multicolor from a remote.
