The best bottle brush trees, for a village, a mantel or a tray

Little sisal trees are the easiest way to make a mantel look like a winter forest. Count, the spread of sizes and color decide which set.

By Sawyer V. · Published

An evergreen wreath hanging on a wooden front door

Bottle brush trees are the small sisal trees on wooden bases that turn up in Christmas villages, on mantels, in trays and shadow boxes, and down the middle of the table. They are cheap, they never drop needles, and a cluster of them in three heights looks like a forest.

What makes or breaks a set is the spread of sizes: a group of identical trees looks like a hedge. We ranked on that. Five below, one to skip.

How we ranked these

Size range first, because a forest needs tall, medium and short trees. Then count, color and how much the listing publishes.

Sizes are tree heights as the listings publish them.

A forest needs three heights

The arithmetic

  1. AerWo: 5.1 in tallest, 2.3 in shortest
  2. 5.1 / 2.3 = 2.2 — the tallest is more than twice the shortest
  3. 24 pack: 1.5 / 1.5 = 1 — every tree the same

A set whose tallest tree is twice its shortest makes a grove with depth: tall at the back, short at the front. A one-size set makes a hedge.

How many for a mantel

The arithmetic

  1. Example mantel: 60 in long (an assumption — measure yours)
  2. Three clusters of 5 trees, one at each end and one in the middle: 15 trees
  3. AerWo 24: 15 on the mantel, 9 left for a tray or the table

A 5 ft mantel takes about 15 trees in three groups, so a 24-tree set covers it with enough left for a centerpiece. The 7-tree Factory Direct Craft set makes one strong group, not three.

Arranging the rest of the mantel is on mantel decorating.

For a Christmas village

Village houses are built small, and 2 to 5 in trees sit in scale beside them. The AerWo’s four sizes, 2.3 to 5.1 in, and the KUUQA’s 38 small trees are the village sets. The villages themselves are on Christmas village sets.

Green, pastel or white

Green is the tradition; colored trees are the retro look. The Darice pink-with-snow set and the KUUQA multicolor bag are vintage. The Factory Direct Craft bleached sisal, glittered silver and white, is modern and wintry, and at up to 6 in it has the tallest trees here. Mixed colors work best in one family — all pastels, or all whites and silvers.

Why the 24 pack is the skip

Every tree in the 24 pack is the same 1.5 in, which reads as scatter rather than a forest. The AerWo has the same count in four sizes, up to 5.1 in.

When you need a bigger tree

Bottle brush trees are the small end of the family. The tabletop end is on tabletop Christmas trees, and more tray and table ideas are on Christmas table centerpieces.

Questions

What are bottle brush trees made of?

Usually sisal, a plant fiber, on a wooden base. The KUUQA, Darice, Factory Direct Craft and 24-pack listings say sisal; the AerWo listing does not state a material.

How many bottle brush trees for a mantel?

About 15 for a 5 ft mantel, in three groups of five. Mix heights within each group.

What size bottle brush trees for a Christmas village?

2 to 5 in. The AerWo set’s 2.3 to 5.1 in trees are village scale.

Can bottle brush trees go near candles?

Not near a real flame; sisal is a dry fiber. Use flameless candles beside them.
