Flocking is the most flattering finish in this category and the most misleading in a product photograph. A white coating fills the visual gaps between branches, so a sparse flocked tree photographs like a full one and then arrives looking thin in an actual room.

Thirteen percent between the fullest and the thinnest tree on this page. The 2,700-tip outlier that used to sit at the top of this table is discontinued, and nothing on sale replaces it.
Against this site’s stated density bands — under 150 tips per foot is sparse, 175 to 225 is normal, over 275 is very full — every tree on this page now lands in or just under the normal band, between 170 and 193 tips per foot. Nothing on sale here is either sparse or very full any more. The bands themselves are explained on tree size and tip count.
Why lights per tip matters more on a flocked tree
On a green tree, dark foliage between the bulbs makes the lights read as points. On a flocked tree the white surface reflects and diffuses, which is lovely when there is enough light and reads as flat grey when there is not.
That is why the DWVO and Best Choice trees, both at about 40 lights per 100 tips, are the safe buys for someone who will not add their own strings. The Yaheetech multicolor matches them at 43 per 100 tips and is the only tree here that publishes colored lights rather than warm white.
Budget the shaping time
The Hykolity listing states 25 to 45 minutes of fluffing for the tree to reach its full form, which is a rare and honest figure in this category, and at 1,446 tips the Hykolity is the fullest tree on this page. It scales with tip count, so treat 45 minutes as the top of the range here rather than the middle.
Hinged branches are the other half of that. Published hinged construction — and on this page only the Hykolity states it — means branches fold down from the pole rather than hooking on individually, which is the difference between forty minutes and two hours. When a sparse flocked tree is the right buy
Deliberately. A flocked tree under 150 tips per foot shows its branch structure, and against a pale wall in a minimal room that reads as a designed choice rather than a cheap tree. It also takes fewer ornaments to look finished.
Nothing on this page is that tree any more: the four normal-band trees all sit between 179 and 193 tips per foot, and the ROSOS is double that. If the sparse look is what you want, buy on the published tip count rather than on the flocking, and read the bands on tree size and tip count first — flocking is what hides a low tip count in a photograph.
Flocked trees change what else works
A white tree is a different background from a green one, and two things follow. Warm white lights read cream against flocking rather than gold, and metallic ornaments that disappeared into a green tree now stand out sharply.

Storing a flocked tree without stripping it
Every handling event sheds flocking, and storage is the biggest handling event of the year. Fold branches up toward the trunk rather than compressing the tree into an undersized bag, and size the bag on published dimensions rather than a “fits up to” claim.
