Swag or wreath: two answers to the same door

A wreath is a circle sized to two-thirds of the door. A swag is a vertical drop that fits where a circle will not — including behind a storm door.

By Sawyer V. · Published

Flag bunting strung along a wooden porch rail

The default Christmas door decoration is a wreath, and for most doors it is the right one. But a wreath is a thick circle, and there are doors it does not suit: a narrow door, a glazed door where the circle covers the view, a door behind a storm door with two inches of gap, and a pair of doors where two circles look like eyes.

A swag is the other shape: a vertical spray that hangs from a single point, thin against the door, and proportioned to height rather than width.

Wreath & Watt earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through the Amazon links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not change the order of the picks — here is exactly how we are funded.

How we compared them

Published dimensions first, then lights and power, then how each one fixes to a door. The deciding figure is different for each shape: diameter for a wreath, length for a swag.

The swag publishes more lights than either wreath — 30 over 36 in, against 50 around a 75 in circumference. Lights per foot is what decides how each reads at night.

Sizing each shape to the same door

Wreaths are sized by the two-thirds rule: the diameter should be about two-thirds of the door width. Swags are sized by drop: roughly a third to a half of the door height, hung from the top rail.

The arithmetic

  1. Standard door leaf: 80 in tall, 36 in wide
  2. Wreath: two-thirds of 36 in = 24 in diameter — which is what both wreaths here publish
  3. Swag at a third of the height: 80 / 3 = 27 in
  4. Swag at half the height: 40 in

Both shapes land where the products land: a 24 in wreath and a 30 to 36 in swag are correct for the same standard door. The two are interchangeable in proportion and not in shape.

The full wreath sizing table, including double doors and windows, is on the wreath size guide.

The storm-door case a swag wins outright

A storm door leaves a gap of one to three inches in front of the main door, and a lit wreath with trim is usually four to six inches deep. That is the most common reason a wreath cannot go where it is wanted, and it ends with the wreath on a hook inside the house instead.

A swag is flat by comparison: greenery sprays downward rather than outward, so its depth is mostly the thickness of the stems. Where a wreath will not clear, a swag usually will — and if neither fits, the answer is to hang the decoration on the storm door itself, which is covered on Christmas door decorations.

Which reads better after dark

Lights per foot decides this, and the swag wins on the published figures.

The arithmetic

  1. Swag: 30 LEDs over 36 in = 10 LEDs per foot
  2. Wreath: 50 LEDs around a 24 in circle = 50 / (3.14 x 24 / 12) = 8 LEDs per foot of circumference
  3. Both are dense enough to read from the sidewalk; neither needs adding to

Similar density, different shapes of light: a bright vertical line against a bright ring. The vertical reads better on a narrow door and the ring reads better on a wide one.

Both shapes come in battery with a timer, which on an unpowered front door is the only sensible way to buy either. The reasoning is on battery or plug-in.

Who should buy which

Buy a wreath for a standard or wide door with clearance in front of it, and size it to two-thirds of the width. It is the shape people expect, and the field is ranked on the best artificial wreaths.

Buy a swag for a narrow door, a glazed door you want to see through, a door behind a storm door, or a pair of doors where two circles would compete. Also buy a swag if the decoration has to hang above the frame rather than on it. The swag field is on Christmas door swags.

Good

  • Published as weatherproof and outdoor-rated, which most lit swags carefully avoid saying
  • An included hanging sash and an automatic timer mean nothing else to buy and nothing to switch

Watch out

  • 30 LEDs across 36 in is modest — it defines the shape after dark rather than lighting the door
  • Battery power on an exterior door means changing cells in December weather

Good

  • 160 tips on a 24-inch frame is dense enough that the wire ring does not show
  • A built-in timer on a battery wreath is the difference between using it and forgetting it
  • Warm white LED reads correctly against a painted door; cool white does not

Watch out

  • Trim adds depth that no listing publishes, and that depth is what decides your storage box size

Good

  • Flocking reads well against a dark door where plain green disappears
  • Tip count published, which flocked wreaths often skip

Watch out

  • 113 tips is materially sparser than the Crestwood's 160 at the same diameter
  • Flocking sheds, and it sheds worst in storage

Questions

›Is a swag or a wreath better for a front door?

A wreath for a standard or wide door with clearance in front of it. A swag for a narrow door, a glazed door, or a door behind a storm door — a swag is flat where a lit wreath is four to six inches deep.

›What size swag for a standard door?

30 to 36 in, which is a third to a half of an 80 in door leaf. Both swags here publish sizes in that range.

›Will a wreath fit behind a storm door?

Usually not. A storm door leaves one to three inches and a lit, trimmed wreath is four to six inches deep. A swag fits where a wreath will not.

›Do swags come with lights?

Some do. The one here publishes 30 warm white LEDs on a battery with a 6-hour timer, which is about 10 lights per foot — slightly denser than a 24 in wreath at 50 lights.
