The best fall urn fillers, proportioned to the urn they go in
An empty urn either side of a door is the most obvious gap on a fall porch. Height, count and UV resistance decide what fills it.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Most front doors have a pair of urns or planters that grew summer annuals and now hold soil. Filling them is the quickest fall upgrade a porch can get, and the one people put off because a proper arrangement looks like florist work.
It is not. It is three things: something tall at the back, something round in the middle, something that spills over the edge. The products below cover those roles. Five sets, one to skip.

Good
- Sold as an urn filler, with a spike that pushes straight into soil or foam — no arranging required
- 22 in of height published, which is what you need to check the proportion against the urn
- A pair, so a front door gets a matched set
Watch out
- One shape only: a ball. It needs a trailing piece or a grass to look arranged rather than planted
- Fall coloring on a topiary ball is a narrower look than a mixed arrangement

Good
- 24 bundles is enough to fill a pair of large urns with layers rather than a single shape — the listing says two 16 in pots, which is exactly this slot's job
- Publishes a 13 in stem length, so the height of the arrangement is known before it arrives
- A double UV-resistant coating published, where most of this field claims UV resistance once or not at all
- Wired stems and detachable heads, so bundles can be bent, trimmed and mixed between pots
Watch out
- Two styles only — eucalyptus or leaf grass — so the variety is in the foliage rather than the blooms
- At 13 in the stems suit pots up to 16 in; a tall urn needs something behind them for height
- Arrives flattened and needs a hot-water dip to open the petals out
#ad · Price as of October 10, 2026 · How we are funded
Specs from the Amazon listing (ASIN B0F8B18NK6), verified via the Creators API 2026-10-06. Replaces the Riceshoot B0H3PR5Q5R, which Amazon now shows as currently unavailable; Riceshoot's live fall product is a 6-pack of hanging plants, not a 24-bundle set. This one holds the 24-bundle count and the planter use, and it publishes the 13 in stem length and the double UV coating the old listing never did.

#3 — Sun that lasts to Thanksgiving
Capilou artificial fall flowers, 20 pieces, UV resistant bushes
20 UV-resistant fall bushes
6.5

Best for sun: the UV claim is the one spec that separates a September arrangement from a faded one.

Good
- UV resistance claimed, which matters for an arrangement that goes out in early September
- Bush form fills faster than single stems
Watch out
- Stem length not published
- Bushes give bulk but little height

Good
- Grasses are the vertical element an urn needs behind the round shapes
- Twenty stems is enough for two urns
Watch out
- No stem length or UV claim published
- Grass alone is not an arrangement; it wants mums or a topiary in front

#5 — skip this
Artificial boxwood topiary bushes, 24 in, set of 2

Good
- 24 in of published height
- Boxwood works all year, not just in fall
Watch out
- Green boxwood is not a fall filler — it is the thing a fall filler goes in front of
- Stock was down to 12 when we checked

How we ranked these
Published height first, because proportion against the urn is the whole game. Then how many pieces come in the pack, then whether the listing claims UV resistance — an arrangement that goes out in early September sits in a lot of sun before Thanksgiving.
| Filler | Pieces | Height | Role | UV claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PATIO CHOICE topiary | 2 | 22 in | Centerpiece with spike | All-weather |
| Alupssuc bundles | 24 | 13 in | Bulk and color | Double UV coating |
| Capilou bushes | 20 | Not stated | Bulk | UV resistant |
| Betylifoy wheat grass | 20 | Not stated | Height at the back | Not stated |
| Boxwood topiary | 2 | 24 in | Year-round base | Not stated |
Only two listings publish a height, which is the single most useful number for an urn.

The proportion an urn wants
The arithmetic
- Example urn: 16 in tall (an assumption — measure yours)
- Filler at 1.5x the urn: 16 x 1.5 = 24 in of arrangement above the rim
- PATIO CHOICE topiary: 22 in, so the pair sits just under that
- Total height: 16 + 22 = 38 in beside a 80 in door
A filler between one and a half and two times the urn height reads as planted rather than perched. On a 16 in urn, the 22 in topiary lands at about 38 in overall — roughly half the height of a standard door, which is the proportion that looks deliberate either side of it.
Tall, round, spilling
The wheat grass is the vertical at the back. The bushes and flower bundles are the mass in the middle. Nothing here is a true trailing piece, so for the spill over the rim use a few stems of artificial fall leaves wired to hang down, or a short length of fall garland laid over the edge.
Mums are the other obvious middle layer, and they have their own page: artificial mums.
Filling an urn that is empty
An urn with no soil needs something for stems to bite into. Florist foam, a block of polystyrene or a bag of sand in the base all work, and the PATIO CHOICE spike pushes into any of them. Weight matters as much as grip: a tall arrangement in a light plastic urn goes over in the first October gale.
Why the boxwood is the skip
The boxwood topiary publishes the best dimensions here and is the wrong plant: it is green, year-round and entirely un-autumnal. Buy it as a permanent urn base if you want one, but it does nothing for a fall porch on its own.
The rest of the porch
Urns flank the door; the rest of the fall porch is on small porch fall decor, hay bales and corn stalks and the calendar on the September-to-December plan.
Questions
›How tall should a fall urn filler be?
One and a half to two times the height of the urn. On a 16 in urn that is 24 to 32 in of arrangement above the rim.
›What goes in a fall urn?
Three layers: something tall at the back such as wheat grass, something round in the middle such as mums or a topiary, and something spilling over the rim.
›How do you hold artificial stems in an empty urn?
Florist foam, polystyrene or sand. Add weight at the base as well — a tall arrangement in a light urn blows over.
›Do artificial fall flowers fade outdoors?
In eleven weeks of September-to-November sun, yes, unless the listing claims UV resistance. Only one filler here does.
