Hay bales and corn stalks are the structure of a traditional fall porch: the bales give the pumpkins something to sit on, and the stalks are the only thing on a fall porch that adds height. Everything else sits below the knee.

More than five times the volume between the largest and smallest bale, all sold under the same description. The Anderson's bales are furniture; the SEDLAV bale is a step-sized accent.
Which you want depends on the porch. A pair of lifesize bales flanking a door is a display; on a narrow stoop they block it. On a small porch, the step-sized bales are the right scale — see fall decor when the porch is a stoop.
Cardboard, straw or plastic
Cardboard and paper — the Anderson’s bales — give the scale and none of the mess, and they cannot take rain. They belong under a porch roof.
Real straw — the SEDLAV bale — is the only thing that looks exactly like straw. It sheds, it holds moisture after rain, and it is a one- or two-season purchase outdoors.
Plastic — the Cinnvoice bale — is indifferent to weather and folds flat, and it looks like plastic up close. On an open step, that is the trade worth making. The wider durability argument is on fall decor weather durability.
Corn stalks are for height
A fall porch is pumpkins, mums, bales and a wreath — and everything but the wreath sits low. Corn stalks tied to a porch post or flanking a door are the one element that lifts the eye, which is why they have been on fall porches for as long as there have been fall porches.
The 20-stalk bundle is real and dried, and it publishes a 3 ft height — which is worth checking against the space, because 3 ft is a bundle beside a door rather than the full-height stand most people picture. Tie each bundle to something structural rather than trusting it to stand, and plan to replace it every year. Our skip, the flat cutouts, publishes the 71 in the real bundle never reaches — but it is a picture of a corn stalk, and from anywhere but straight on it reads as a sign.
Building the arrangement
Bales are a base, not a feature. Stack pumpkins on and around them, put the corn stalks behind, and let the arrangement step down from the stalks to the bales to the pumpkins on the step. The pumpkins themselves — sizes, lit versions, real against artificial — are on outdoor pumpkins and lanterns and real vs artificial pumpkins.
After the season
The plastic bales fold flat and store almost anywhere. The cardboard bales need dry space and a lot of it. Real straw and dried stalks should not be stored at all: they bring damp and insects into whatever they are stored with, so compost them in November. The reasons are on damp and pest protection, and the timing on the porch plan, September to December.
