The best Christmas lanterns, sized for the step they are going to stand on
Published heights here run 11 to 18 inches, every single listing publishes a timer, and not one publishes a base width. Those three facts are the whole category.
By Sawyer V. · Published

Buy the 18 inch pair with the timer for a front door: 18 inches is the tallest published height in this field, it comes as two, the greenery is already on it, and the timer means the pair lights itself every evening for the whole season.
If you would rather dress them yourself, the 14 inch waterproof pair is the best-specified lantern here — height, pieces, weather claim, power source and timer, five published figures — and 14 inches is the most placeable height in the category. For indoors, the 16 inch pair with a remote is the one you can switch from a chair instead of reaching under a glass pane. And if the porch beam is the place rather than the step, the 13 inch pair is the only product here that publishes a hanging option.
Two things are true of this whole field and worth knowing before you choose. Every single listing publishes a timer, which almost no other category on this site manages. And not one publishes a base width, which is the figure that would tell you whether a lantern sits safely on a narrow step ledge.

The pick for a porch pair. The tallest published height, already dressed, with a timer — and you will still want to put a hand on it before you walk away from a narrow step.

Good
- Eighteen inches is the tallest published height in this field, and height is what decides whether a lantern on a step reads as a deliberate pair or as two small objects on the floor
- A pair, with the greenery already on it, which is the difference between buying a lantern and assembling a display
- A timer is published, so the pair comes on by itself every evening for the whole season
Watch out
- Publishes no base width, which is the figure that decides whether it sits safely on a narrow step ledge — and no lantern in this entire field publishes one
- The trim is fixed: pine cones and needles are a traditional look, and you cannot take them out for a modern scheme
- The most expensive set here

Good
- Fourteen inches is the middle of this field and the height that works in the most places — a step, a hearth, a console or a porch table
- Publishes height, piece count, a weather claim, a power source and a timer: five figures, the most complete spec sheet on this page
- Undressed black metal and glass, so it takes whatever greenery or ribbon the rest of the porch is using rather than imposing its own
Watch out
- Waterproof with no IP figure behind it is a word, not a rating — treat it as covered-porch rather than standing-water weatherproofing
- Battery operated plus a timer means cells doing a full season, and no battery life is published
- No base width, the blank the whole category shares

16 in, 2 pieces, remote and timer, black metal

Good
- Sixteen inches with a remote is the best combination here for indoor use: tall enough for a hearth, and controllable without kneeling down to a switch under a glass pane
- Publishes both the height and the material, and black metal is the finish that disappears behind the light rather than competing with it
- A remote plus a timer means both the nightly cycle and the one-off override are covered
Watch out
- No weather claim at all, which rules it out of the places the waterproof pair is fine in
- A remote is a thing to lose, and nothing published says the timer can be set on the unit itself
- No base width, like everything else here

Bdor Christmas lanterns, 13 in, set of 2, waterproof, daily timer
13 in, 2 pieces, waterproof, automatic daily timer, hang or stand

Good
- The only lantern here that publishes a hanging option as well as a standing one, which doubles the places a small porch can put it
- An automatic daily timer plus battery power means no cord anywhere, which is what makes a hanging lantern possible at all
- Thirteen inches is small enough to hang from a shepherd's hook or a porch beam without looking precarious
Watch out
- Thirteen inches is near the bottom of this field: as a standing pair at a front door it reads small against an 80 in door
- Waterproof again stated without a figure
- Battery life not published, on a product designed to hang where changing cells means a ladder

DECORKEY stained glass snowman lantern, 14 in, timer

Good
- Stained glass is a real difference rather than a trim difference: the lantern itself is the decoration, lit or unlit
- Fourteen inches with a published timer, at the lowest price on this page
- Red metal with a figurative panel is the one lantern here that works as a single object on a hall table where a plain black pair would need company
Watch out
- Sold as one where every other product on this page is a pair, so a flanking pair costs twice
- A snowman panel is the narrowest look here and it comes down on the 26th with the rest of the figurative decorations
- A stained glass panel is the most fragile thing in this field and nothing published says it ships or stores in a fitted box

#6 — skip this
Orchid & Ivy lighted holiday lanterns, 11 in, set of 2, timer
11 in, 2 pieces, timer, greenery and buffalo plaid ribbon
5.3
/ 10
Skip this here. A dressed pair with a timer at the lowest price per lantern on the page, and the skip for THIS page's reader, who is lighting a porch step or a hearth. Eleven inches is the shortest published height in the field, and a pair of 11 in lanterns on a step beside a standard 80 in front door reads as an afterthought. On a mantel, a windowsill or a shelf it is the best value here — which is a different job.
It is the skip for this page's reader, who is lighting a porch or a hearth — 11 in is too small for either. On a mantel or a shelf it is the best value here.

Good
- A dressed pair with a timer at the lowest per-lantern price on this page
- Eleven inches is the right height for a mantel, a windowsill or a bathroom shelf, where the 16 and 18 in lanterns are too tall
- Buffalo plaid ribbon is already on it, which saves buying ribbon for two lanterns
Watch out
- Eleven inches is the shortest published height in the field, and on a front step a pair of 11 in lanterns beside a standard 80 in door reads as an afterthought
- No weather claim at all, despite the hanging option
- A fixed buffalo plaid trim commits the lanterns to a farmhouse scheme

How we ranked these
Published height first, because it decides whether a lantern reads from the street or disappears. Then the timer, which is published across the board and is the reason this category is easy to live with. Then the weather claim, because a step in December is a wet place and the claims here are words rather than ratings. Then spec completeness.
We have not weathered or run any of these. Everything in the table is a figure a listing prints, and the placement arithmetic is ours. Live prices under every buy button are refreshed daily and stamped with the date they were read.

Six of six publish a height and six of six publish a timer, which makes this one of the better-specified categories on this site. Two make a waterproof claim and neither carries an IP figure. Not one publishes a base width or a battery life.

Height against the door, and the step it stands on
A lantern on a front step is not seen on its own. It is seen against the door, which on a standard American entry is 80 inches tall, and against whatever else is on the step. That is what makes the published height a real buying figure rather than a detail.
The arithmetic
- A standard entry door is 80 in tall and commonly 36 in wide
- An 11 in lantern is about one seventh of the door height
- A 14 in lantern is about one sixth
- An 18 in lantern is just under a quarter
- A pair of lanterns flanking a 36 in door leaf occupies the step either side of the opening, and the step itself is commonly 11 to 12 in deep (an assumption — measure yours)
- A lantern raised on a riser, a crate or an upturned pot gains that height again
Our reading, from the published heights against a standard door. Sixteen to 18 in is the pair that reads as deliberate from the street. Fourteen inches works on a step and is the most placeable height overall — it also works indoors on a hearth or a console. Thirteen inches and below is a tabletop or a hanging object, and a pair of 11 in lanterns on a step reads as an afterthought beside an 80 in door. The cheapest way to make a short lantern work outside is to raise it, which costs nothing.
The figure nobody publishes
Six listings, six published heights, and not one base width. On an object that stands unattended on a step for six weeks through wind and frost, that is the gap that matters.
A lantern is a tall, narrow, glazed box. Its stability is a function of how wide its foot is and how heavy its base is, and neither is published anywhere in this field. The practical consequence is that a lantern on a shallow step ledge, a sloping path edge or a windy porch corner is something to test with your hand before you walk away from it — and something to put against a wall rather than at the front of a tread.
Why every listing here publishes a timer, and what it saves
This is genuinely unusual. Across the categories audited on this site, a published timer is the exception — most snow globes do not have one, almost no lighted figure does, and no ceramic Christmas tree except one. Every lantern here does.
The arithmetic
- Thanksgiving weekend 2026 to New Year's Day 2027 is 37 evenings
- One lantern switched by hand: 74 operations
- A pair: 148 operations
- Each operation on a lantern means lifting a glazed door and reaching down to a candle base
- With a published timer: 1 operation, at the start
Ours, from a count of the days. The reason the timer is universal in this category and not in others is the switch position: on a flameless candle inside a glazed box, the switch is at the bottom of the candle behind a hinged pane, which is the most awkward switch in seasonal decor. A manufacturer that leaves the timer out of a lantern is selling an object nobody will keep using past the first week.
Two things the listings do not tell you. None publishes the timer DURATION, so whether it is a 6-on-18-off cycle or something else is unknown until it arrives — the common cycles are covered on Christmas light timers. And none publishes a battery life, which on a battery lantern running a full season is the figure you actually want. The candle inside is its own product class with its own published figures: flameless candles ranks them on diameter, waterproofing and timer, and a lantern whose candle dies is a lantern that takes a replacement.
Waterproof as a word, not a rating
Two of these six say waterproof. Neither publishes an IP figure, and nothing else in the field makes any weather claim at all.
Treat an unrated waterproof claim on a lantern as covered-porch rather than standing-in-the-weather. A glazed metal lantern will shed rain off its roof perfectly well; the vulnerable parts are the battery compartment in the candle and the seam where the floor meets the frame, and water that gets into a lantern does not drain out of it. On an exposed step, either pick the pair that at least makes the claim, or put the lanterns under a porch roof. The general standard for what an outdoor rating means is on outdoor Christmas light safety.
Dressed, undressed or stained glass
Three different propositions, and the choice depends on whether the rest of the porch already has a scheme.
The arithmetic
- Dressed: greenery, cones or ribbon already attached; one purchase, one look, no planning
- Undressed: plain black metal and glass; takes whatever the rest of the porch is using
- Stained glass: the lantern itself is the decoration, lit or unlit, and it is figurative
- Two of the six here are dressed, three are plain, one is stained glass
- A dressed lantern's trim is fixed: the cones and plaid cannot be removed for a modern scheme
Our reading: buy plain if the porch already has a wreath, a garland and a color, because a lantern with its own fixed trim will fight them. Buy dressed if the lanterns ARE the porch — one purchase that looks finished out of the box. The stained glass piece is the only single lantern on this page, which makes it an indoor object on a hall table rather than half of a pair.
If the lanterns are the porch, the rest of the plan is on front porch Christmas decor, and the pathway layer that usually goes with a lantern pair is on Christmas pathway lights. A lantern pair plus a wreath on the door is the smallest complete porch there is — the small-space version of the same argument is on small porch fall decor.
So which one
For a front door, the 18 inch pair — the tallest published height, already dressed, with a timer. For a step or a hearth with the rest of the porch already planned, the 14 inch waterproof pair, which is the best-specified product here and the most placeable height. For indoors, the 16 inch pair with the remote. For hanging from a beam or a shepherd’s hook, the 13 inch pair, which is the only one that publishes the option. For a single object on a hall table, the stained glass snowman. And if the 11 inch pair looked like the bargain, it is — on a mantel, not on a step.
Questions
›What size Christmas lantern should I buy for a porch?
Sixteen to 18 inches for a pair flanking a front door, which reads as deliberate against a standard 80 inch entry door. Fourteen inches is the most placeable height overall and works on a step, a hearth or a console. Thirteen inches and below is a tabletop or hanging object — a pair of 11 inch lanterns on a step reads as an afterthought. Raising a short lantern on a riser or an upturned pot gains that height back for nothing.
›Do Christmas lanterns have timers?
All six on this page do, which is unusual — most seasonal categories leave the timer out. The reason is the switch position: on a flameless candle inside a glazed box, the switch is at the bottom of the candle behind a hinged pane, which is the most awkward switch in seasonal decor. Across the 37 evenings from the Thanksgiving weekend to New Year, a timer saves about 148 operations on a pair.
›Are Christmas lanterns waterproof?
Two of the six here say so, and neither publishes an IP figure. Treat an unrated claim as covered-porch rather than standing-in-the-weather. The glazed roof sheds rain fine; the vulnerable parts are the battery compartment in the candle and the seam at the floor, and water that gets into a lantern does not drain out.
›Will a Christmas lantern blow over?
It can, and no listing in this category publishes a base width or a weight to help you judge. A glazed lantern catches wind like a lampshade, and the taller it is the more it catches. Put a handful of gravel, sand or a flat stone inside the base under the candle, and stand it against a wall rather than at the front of a step tread.
›Should I buy a dressed or a plain Christmas lantern?
Plain, if the porch already has a wreath, a garland and a color scheme — a lantern with fixed cones or plaid ribbon will fight them, and the trim cannot be removed. Dressed, if the lanterns ARE the porch, because it is one purchase that looks finished out of the box. Plain black metal has one more advantage: it is not a Christmas object, so it can stay out through February.
