The animals are life size and the humans are not. That is fine: a 5.4 ft figure posed sitting or crouching reads as adult, while a 36 in figure only works as a child figure or a seated pose. The animals carry the scene either way because a cat-sized cat skeleton is exactly right.
Poses that tell a story
Posable joints are the whole point. A dog skeleton sitting at the foot of a seated human skeleton, a cat skeleton on the step above them, a leash of rope between the two: that is a scene, and it costs less than one animatronic. Give the dog a food bowl, put the cat on a windowsill where a real cat would sit, and the display starts doing the work that animatronics charge for.
Lighting bones
White plastic bone is the single best surface in a Halloween yard for black light: it throws the UV back at you and the rest of the lawn goes dark.
